noteworthy Youth Tour contest seeks entries T

eens who are interested in participating in the Rural Electric Youth Tour

are encouraged to enter Kiamichi Electric's Youth Tour essay contest. Open to high school juniors in co-op service territory, the competition this year will require teens to ponder the needs of their own rural community and write an essay about it.

Todd Minshall, KEC Youth Tour coordinator, said he hopes the essay writing process will encourage applicants to think seriously about their community needs and inspire them to propose workable solutions. "High school kids can be creative. It will be interesting to see what local kids view as

you care by delivering an “I Love You” balloon to his or her home? Hold on.

Mylar balloons, constructed of metalized nylon so they’re extra-shiny and easy to mold into fun shapes, are powerful conductors of electricity. If you let one slip from your grip while you’re outside, you’ll not only lose your balloon, you could cause a power outage or even an injury.

If one of these festive party decorations floats into power lines or lands on an electrical substation, its metal coating could short out a circuit and leave your neighbors in the dark, or it could cause an electrical fire that damages the equipment.

important and see how they would go about correcting any problems," Minshall said. "We think it's a great way to encourage local teens to begin thinking like leaders."

Kiamichi Electric Youth Tour judges will select two winners. The teens will represent the co-op on the tour, which takes place June 14-20, 2013 in Washington DC.

Youth Tour information packets and applications are available at local high schools, at Kiamichi Electric Cooperative in Wilburton and online at www.kiamichielectric.org. The essay deadline is March 29, 2013.

Don't shock others on Valentine’s Day

If the balloon you’re carrying is attached to a metallic ribbon and happens to brush an overhead line or another charged piece of equipment, it could shock or electrocute you.

The Energy Education Council says the balloons are even dangerous indoors if they come into contact with an exposed wire.

So, even though Mylar balloons are popular, the council advises parents to puncture, deflate and dispose of balloons after the party’s over, instead of letting them float around the house or yard until they lose their shape.

If your balloon gets tangled in a power line, please call Kiamichi Electric to report it. Never get close enough to a live wire to try to dislodge the item yourself.
