Predicting the Next

I Ice Age

New tools help Kiamichi Electric forces mobilize for major storms

n a disaster scenario, preparedness is everything, and therein lies the problem when dealing with a wily and unpredictable Mother Nature.

A new weather tool available to utilities nationwide promises to be, if not a game changer for utility ground forces, at the very least a most useful tool in the arsenal of storm preparedness. Created by veteran electric cooperative professional Sid Sperry and meteorolgist Steve Piltz, the Sperry- Piltz Ice Index charts and predicts the potential severity of ice storms in similar fashion to hurricane forecasting.

Kiamichi Electric Cooperative CEO Jim Jackson said Kiamichi Electric has used the tool to keep an eye on approaching storms maybe once or twice so far. "Fortunately weather conditions have not been right to produce a big ice storm, but when it does, the Ice Index will certainly help us."

Co-op personnel can view the Ice Index online to study the path of the storm and check predicted ice accumulations. Jackson said this knowledge will help co-op crews and contractors mobilize at least 48 hours in advance.

The last major ice storm in Kiamichi Electric service territory occurred January 2007. That storm destroyed over 2,000 poles, downed powerlines for miles, and left 4,000 members without power.

"We can't prevent storms from happening, but with the Ice Index at least we can have our crews notified and in place, and order extra materials we might need, before it arrives. This helps us respond faster and get the power back on," Jackson said.

A full report on the Ice Index appears in the February 2013 issue of Oklahoma Living. View it online at www.ok-living.coop.
