Is Snoring More Deadly Than Smoking?
S
noring increases risk of a heart attack even more than smoking, being overweight,
or having high cholesterol, according to a study at Detroit’s Henry Ford Hospital. Experts have long recognized
a link between snoring and heart disease, but until now, ordinary snoring was mainly considered a nuisance. Those most at risk were thought to be those who had obstructive sleep apnea, a disorder characterized by loud snoring and periodic pauses in breathing. The new study, however, indicates that cardiovascular risks are present even with ordinary snoring. Researchers found that snorers
had significantly thicker carotid arteries — arteries that carry blood to the brain — than non-snorers, probably due to the trauma caused by the vibrations of snoring that leads to inflammation. Carotid thickness is a major risk
factor for heart attack and stroke. “Snoring is more than a bedtime
annoyance, and it shouldn’t be ignored,” said lead study author Robert Deeb. “Patients need to seek
CANCER: FRIED FOOD DANGER Men who eat fried foods at least once
a week increase their risk of developing prostate cancer by 30 to 37 percent compared to men who eat them less than once a month, according to a study in the medical journal The Prostate. The study, which included more than 3,000 men, found that those who ate fried foods frequently also had a greater risk of aggressive forms of prostate cancer. Researchers hypothesize that carcinogenic compounds are created when foods are fried at high temperatures and that the compounds increase as the oil is reused and frying times are increased.
DIABETES: THE CARROT FIX Beta carotene — an antioxidant found
treatment the same way they would if they had sleep apnea, high blood pressure, or other risk factors.”
ANTIDOTE FOR HIGH-FAT MEAL: WALK
The best thing you can do for your heart after a high-fat meal is to walk, according to a new Japanese study, which found that light exercise, particularly after meals, prevents triglyceride levels (an indicator for heart disease) from becoming elevated. The study, published in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, found that a combination of low-intensity walking and light resistance exercises curbed triglycerides that normally follow a high-fat meal.
RED WINE WITH STEAK CAN LOWER CHOLESTEROL
E
njoying a glass of red wine with steak can actually lower cholesterol, according to researchers at the
Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Scientists discovered that red wine blocks the
absorption of malondialdehyde, a substance that accumulates in the blood and leads to cholesterol formation. Study volunteers’ cholesterol levels went down or stayed the same after having red wine with a meal.

in orange fruits and vegetables — helps prevent Type 2 diabetes, especially in those who have a genetic predisposition to the disease, according to new research. A study in the journal Human Genetics found that a high intake of beta carotene lowered glucose levels in people carrying a common variant in a gene called SLC30A4.
DIET: LOW-CAL DRINK WARNING Alcohol combined with sugar-free mixers
may save you calories, but they get you drunk quicker, according to a study at Northern Kentucky University. Women are most at risk because they tend to choose diet mixers, and it takes less alcohol to get them drunk. Researchers found that breath-alcohol readings were higher in drinkers who had liquor that was mixed with a diet drink. Study authors believe that sugar, unlike artificial sweeteners, slows the movement of alcohol into the bloodstream.
WEIGHT: VIAGRA FIGHTS FLAB The same little blue pill that fights
erectile dysfunction may also help men lose weight, say scientists. German researchers noticed that mice being treated with Viagra (sildenafil) became resistant to obesity, even when fed a high-fat diet. Scientists at the University of Bonn found that Viagra increased the conversion of harmful white fat cells into beneficial beige ones. “Beige fat cells burn the energy from ingested food and convert it to heat,” said researcher Dr. Alexander Pfeifer. In addition to burning fat, researchers noticed that Viagra prevented white cells from releasing hormones that cause harmful inflammation.
