federalists,” “fundamentalists,” or racist/white supremacists.” As a conservative and fundamentalist, I believe in every man or woman’s right to live free without government interference. If “anti-federalist” means that I am anti-big government, then I will wear that tag proudly. The Founding Fathers did not
believe in meddling in every aspect of a citizen’s life. Nor did they believe in a large military, but given the world’s propensity toward violence and anarchy, a large military has been a necessity. I proudly served 20 years of my life in defense of the ideas put forward by those great men who put it all on the line to break free from a tyrannical government. dennis sheridan Tillamook, Ore.
GOP’S LINCOLN Just a bit of research reveals that neither the Democrats nor the Republicans have changed their stripes since 1865 (“Hollywood’s Party for Lincoln,” March). The most vehement opposition to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 came from Democrats. It wasn’t a Republican who stood in an Arkansas school doorway in 1957 but a Democrat, Gov. Orval Faubus, who sent out the National Guard in an eff ort to
block African-American students from entering Little Rock’s all- white Central High School. It was a Republican president, none other than Dwight D. Eisenhower, who prevailed against Faubus’ attempt to keep the schools segregated. We are in the midst of a major rewrite of American history now that borders on propaganda.

STEIN CONFOUNDS I hesitate to say this, but Ben Stein may be creating a problem for the Republican brand (“Don’t Fear Corporations,” February). How could so learned and witty a spokesman for conservative ideas be bad for the GOP? By confl ating corporations and capitalism. Granted, Stein reminds us of much
that is praiseworthy in his article, but he fails to address legitimate reasons to fear the crony capitalism rampant in many sectors of the economy, which has caused great harm to countless families by Wall Street scoundrels and their brethren of both parties in Congress. However, almost no one in Congress has suff ered personally as a result. richard synnestvedt Bryn Athyn, Pa.
