Ambience at the After–Party

Renegade helps to design the ultimate after–party for new Bond film, Skyfall, at the Tate Modern.

London–based creative lighting and design practice Renegade were delighted to get the opportunity to create a dramatic lighting scheme at London’s iconic Tate Modern. The venue played host to an incredible after–party for the world premiere of the latest James Bond film, Skyfall. Nick Gray of Renegade was working at the after–party for event producers AD Events. Provided with a demanding production brief, Gray set out to create an event as astounding and impressive as the film’s premiere screening at the Royal Albert Hall. An incredible architectural space, the

Turbine Hall of the Tate Modern provided the perfect backdrop for some incredible

lighting effects, as Gray explains; “The Turbine Hall is an amazing environment to work in and already highly atmospheric, so the real challenge was to add requisite 007 qualities like mystery, action and intrigue to the setting and to further ‘wow’ those who had already been blown away by experiencing the movie premiere!” The space was left deliberately clean and clear of visible rigging and technical infrastructure, so special scaffolding structures were built around pillars to provide lighting positions and to avoid having to run overhead trussing down the room. Scenic projections were used to transport guests to ‘downtown Shanghai’, whilst additional videos and effects were played out on staggered floor–standing LED screens.

One of the most important aspects of the lighting design was to create a show– stopping entrance for the 1600 guests. Gray used the Bridge immediately at the entrance of the Turbine Hall as a focal point for the design so that it was the first impression guests had of the excitement to come. Gray used Clay Paky Sharpies pointing directly at the entrance to shoot

piercing shafts of light down the Bridge, whilst 12 Vari*Lite 3500 Spots silhouetted guests as they entered the building. Below the bridge, an assortment of

luminaires including Martin MAC 301 LED wash moving lights, ETC Source Fours and pin–spots added to the atmosphere of the space. The interior lighting for the event was programmed and run by Rob Gawler using a Hog 3 console, whilst playback, projections and other video content

for the amazing event was designed by Digital Insanity.
