Out and About Clay Paky Drake’s Club Paradise Tour Europe and North America

Fixtures from Clay Paky are used to create a stunning setting for hip–hop artist Drake’s Club Paradise Tour.

Sharpys from Clay Paky have been selected as a key part of the lighting rig for a European and North American tour for US artist Drake’s second studio album. Named the Club Paradise Tour, the show’s aesthetic has been described as “a seemingly factory- like structure of equipment…strong, angular, geometric, almost harsh” by lighting designer Patrick Dierson, who selected the Sharpy fixtures for use as part of the project. Dierson believes this aesthetic reflects the ‘strong and masculine’ stance that Drake portrays through his music. Dierson’s task was to create a look for the tour that seemed entirely customised for the artist, without the need for too much custom equipment. A total of 60 Sharpys have been used to form the basis of the touring rigs. These have been hung above the stage and mounted at 90° angles in an iconic ParaCube wall for the show. “The units are used as aerial beam

effects, overall stage washes and, as unconventional as it may seem, also key light for several intimate moments in the show,” Dierson explains. He believes that the Sharpys used have created a truly definitive look for the show, which has worked really well; “We were looking to create a very

masculine and aggressive look to the overall design, and the Sharpy's tight beam, prismatic effects, fast movement and unrivalled output made it the obvious choice”.

As well as creating a “masculine and

aggressive” look to suit the hip-hop artist, the fixtures were also able to tone it down for more intimate moments, with Dierson tapping into the fixtures aerial image quality to produce more delicate lighting effects when needed.

The Sharpys have been used through the course of the tour, and Dierson is happy that the fixtures have really been able to perform in terms of reliability, especially in harsh environments; “Sharpys’ unmatched reliability and beautiful quality of light output continue the legacy for which Clay Paky has always been known,” believes Dierson. “I’m very much looking forward to whatever new tools they’ll be releasing this year”. The versatility and performance of the Sharpys for this particular project have helped to create a stunning and exciting tour experience for fans.
