Education Focus: King’s College, London Company: Steinel

There are few educational facilities that have the reputation of King’s College London, but reputation can’t pay the electricity bills, so the institution decided it was time to assess its energy use. King’s has long been committed to carbon reduction, with a focus on being proactive in the efficiency of educational facilities. In order to further drive down emissions and meet CRC obligations, King’s Energy & Environment Manager, Keith McIntyre, decided to look carefully at any areas of on-going energy waste. The College’s halls of residence, where lights would often be left on in corridors, became a prime target.

McIntyre was impressed with the Steinel RS PRO 500 high–frequency sensor light, which would be able to reduce energy consumption and cut the cost of maintenance. Following the success of an initial installation in one hall of residence, King’s was given the go-ahead to roll out Steinel sensor-lights to further student accommodations. According to Steinel, the College has netted considerable energy savings, with a reported 87% reduction, saving £6349 each year on its electricity bills as well as 34.6 tonnes of carbon dioxide. www.steinel.co.uk
