Lawyer Moves

JUNE 2012

Mike Blair, one of the leading lawyers specialising in land and rural business issues in Scotland, is joining Gillespie Macandrew as partner. He was formerly a partner with Thorntons, based in their Perth office as head of their rural legal business section.

Ian Turnbull, Gillespie Macandrew Managing Partner, states: “This is a watershed appointment for us as it means we now have two of the four solicitors in Scotland rated Band 1 Agricultural & Rural Affairs lawyers by Chambers UK. Bringing Mike on board to join the team led by Robert Scott-Dempster, also rated Band 1, adds significant experience to an already highly qualified and knowledgeable department. With the opening of our Perth office scheduled for early August, on-going investment in our land and rural business service continues to be a major objective for the firm.”

Robert Scott-Dempster continues: “Mike is a specialist in rural legal matters and has worked with solicitors’ firms in Edinburgh, Arbroath, Forfar and Perth, following some time spent in the army. He advises clients on a wide range of issues relating to farm and estate business and his areas of particular expertise are forestry, sporting,

environmental matters and renewables. In common with other team members at Gillespie Macandrew, Mike also advises on succession planning, trusts and capital tax matters.

“One of his key strengths is a deep understanding of the challenges facing those working in the agricultural and rural sectors, something reflected in the number of times he has been asked to speak at sector conferences. Mike has also chaired the Law Society of Scotland Rural and Agricultural Law Annual Conferences and is a member of the Law Society of Scotland's Environmental Law Committee.”

Mike Blair adds: “I am convinced that rural Scotland, and what happens there, is becoming increasingly significant to the whole country and I am very much looking forward to the new challenges that will come from the work which I and my new colleagues are undertaking across the country. Our intention is to continue to grow the firm in this important sector of the Scottish economy, and provide the essential support that will ensure our clients achieve their aims.”
