ECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN THE

procedures for the injection of aesthetic fillers have prompted a need for a new approach to the devices used for such injections. In the earliest stages of the technique’s development, standard

hypodermic needles were used. However, the advances made in the injection

technique, as well as dispersal properties of fillers, demanded that more attention was paid to the delivery device in order that the performance of these fillers was optimised. Injection forces needed to be controlled to reduce patient discomfort, as well as reducing the risk that a needle might become detached from the syringe during injection. In the short term, this led to the development of needles with varying internal diameters, but the issue of multiple injections remained a concern, particularly where significant volume of filler was required to be injected. Evolution of injection techniques reached the point

where fillers may now be injected via a single entry point, using a flexible cannula with side port and closed end. This technique is now widely accepted and understood. As with all surgical advances, products have been developed to meet the requirements of the practitioner. But new developments — however ground-breaking or

exciting — usually need refinement so that the benefits of the techniques can be maximised. The objective is to facilitate a safe, repeatable and robust procedure, ensuring that the patient enjoys the best possible outcome.
