LTERED CIRCADIAN RHYTHMS HAVE been identified in untreated prostate cancer


patients. Findings of restored rhythmicity following cancer treatment may have relevance for cancer control and symptom management. This study assessed and compared the cyclic patterns of hot flashes and activity levels in treated prostate cancer patients. Methods: Data were collected during two 24-h periods among 47 prostate patients undergoing androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). Hot flashes were detected objectively through sternal skin conductance and by patients via electronic event marking. Activity levels were recorded on a wrist actigraphy device. Results.: The mean frequency of objectively measured and patient-reported hot flashes was 13.6 (SD = 14.3) and 12.6 (SD = 9.6), respectively. There were significant 24-h circadian rhythms of both hot flashes and activity levels. The peak of the rhythms occurred in early afternoon. There was no significant cross correlation between hot flashes and activity levels. Conclusions: The acrophases of hot flashes and elevated activity levels in this study may represent a normalisation of circadian rhythms following ADT, pointing to the need for more research, including controlled, prospective chronobiologic studies. Future research may have important implications for the survival of prostate cancer patients and the identification of new and safe hot flash treatments.

(AD), pathogenic mutations in the genes encoding β-amyloid precursor protein, and the γ-secretase-complex components presenilin-1 and presenilin-2 appear to result in β-amyloid (Aβ) overproduction. The pathological accumulation of Aβ in the far more common late- onset AD is more likely to be the result of deficient clearance of Aβ. There is evidence that production and turnover of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) help to clear toxic molecules such as Aβ from the interstitial fluid space of the brain to the bloodstream.


I CSF production and turnover have


been shown to be decreased in ageing and in pathological conditions, such as normal pressure hydrocephalus and AD. Reduced formation of CSF, with diminished clearance of Aβ, may play an important role in the onset and progression of AD. If reduced CSF turnover is a risk factor for AD, then its incidence ought to be increased under conditions of CSF circulatory failure. In this paper, the authors hypothesize that genes and variations of genes involved in the CSF production and absorption may contribute to the pathogenesis of late-onset AD.

the treatment of inflammatory acne. In this study we evaluated the efficacy of a home use blue-light LED application in improving lesions and shortening their time to clearance. Methods: This was an IRB approved randomized self-control study. For each patient (n = 30), 2 similar lesions, one of each side of the face were chosen for treatment with either a blue-light LED hand-held or sham device. Treatments (n = 4) were conducted twice daily in the clinic and lesions were followed-up till resolution. Reduction in blemishes size and erythema and the overall improvement were evaluated by both the physician and the patients. Time to lesion resolution was recorded. Results: There was a significant difference in the response of lesions to the blue-light LED application as opposed to the placebo in terms of reduction in lesion size and lesion erythema as well as the improvement in the overall skin condition (p < 0.025). Signs of improvement were observed as early as post 2 treatments. Time to resolution was significantly shorter for the blue-light LED therapy. Conclusion: The results support the effectiveness of using blue-light LED therapy on a daily basis for better improvement and faster resolution of inflammatory acne lesions.
