AROUND THE INDUSTRY GEM provides fast payback

Metered tests carried out on Thermal Energy International’s GEM steam traps by Italcables, Italy’s largest producer of wire strands for pre-stressed concrete and post-tensioned structures, have shown

steam savings of up to 30% compared to mechanical traps. Now, Italcables has fitted GEM traps to its steam baths and kettle boiler used for ‘pickling’ and treating iron wire strands. Steam is a primary energy source at the company’s facility in Cepagatti, Eastern Italy and a major cost in the production process. As the mechanical steam traps regularly failed, resulting in lost steam, reduced performance and additional expenditure, Energy Manager, Mr Rizzinelli, was interested in conducting a metered trial to validate the energy savings made with GEM. The mechanical traps fitted to the steam baths and kettle boiler were replaced by the GEM venturi design and steam meters utilised to test their performance. The results showed that the GEM traps were reducing steam consumption by 20-30%.

Mr Rizzinelli said: “The test results together with the steam meter readings have proved that the GEM traps save energy and operate well over a wide range of condensate loads.”

Smedegaards Rugby league World Cup

Members of a successful bidding consortium are celebrating as the Rugby Football League (RFL) confirmed that Bristol has been

chosen to host matches during the 2013 Rugby League World Cup. The first International Rugby League to be played in the city for over 100 years will be played at the Memorial Stadium. Smedegaard Pumps sponsored Somerset Vikings Rugby League Club, who are associated with the current Superleague champions Leeds Rhinos, and with the help from Smedegaard Pumps they announced that they will request that some world cup players go to Somerset for local young people to meet world cup stars and watch them train. This means that young people near to Smedegaard’s Head office in Somerset may see internationally recognised athletes whilst they prepare for their world cup games at Bristol.

The Vikings have worked hard this year, they have won the South West League and work with local schools and young people including children 7, 8 and 9 years old, and also 13 and 14 year olds which has all been made possible with Smedegaard’s sponsorship of the club.

Clients of Meister Electrical Services are on target to make substantial savings on energy bills and significantly reduce their carbon footprint. Meister Electrical Services, has installed over 1500

DANLERS ceiling flush mounted PIR Occupancy switches as well as DANLERS Surface mounted PIRs in 100’s of McDonald’s Restaurants as part of a rolling plan to populate restaurants with stand-alone energy saving controls, in conjunction with energy efficient LED lighting.

At the time of testing it was calculated that an average energy cost saving of £80 per annum per PIR Occupancy switch fitted could be achieved throughout the scheme.

After a period of trials the final scheme specified the use of PIR occupancy detection in low use areas such as crew rooms, stock rooms and customer toilets. These areas were highlighted as being where most energy was wasted due to lights not being turned off. Back area corridors and laundry rooms were also specified in larger outlets. Meister Electrical chose DANLERS controls because of their product reliability, quality, functionality as well as significantly saving time and money. DANLERS PIR Occupancy switches save energy by turning lights off when nobody is present or the ambient light is sufficient not to require additional lighting, of which Meister Electrical Services have reported a proven success for McDonald’s restaurants as well as their other clients.

Three Hoval UK-manufactured SR Plus 600kW gas-fired boilers are helping the National Assembly for Wales minimise the energy costs and environmental impact of the award-winning Welsh Assembly building – the Senedd. Designed by the Richard Rogers

Partnership, the Assembly building at Cardiff Bay includes a debating chamber capable of accommodating 60 Members, along with office and meeting spaces, public areas, private accommodation and catering. The National Assembly for Wales aims to be exemplar in sustainability and environmental performance. As part of its carbon reduction programme, it decided to replace old heating plant with Hoval SR Plus boilers, which offer up to 92% net efficiency levels with low NOx emissions. SR Plus boilers are also highly insulated, reducing standing losses to around 0.3% for even greater energy savings. The Assembly also benefits from lower cost of ownership as the design of the SR Plus reduces the time required for maintenance.

Other sustainable elements in the building include natural ventilation, extensive use of natural daylight, rainwater harvesting and ground source heat pumps. The sustainable design and low environmental impact of the building were recognised in a BREEAM Excellent rating.
