PRODUCT FINDER Wilo helps meet targets
Wilo has launched the Wilo-Stratos GIGA here in the UK. It’s another highly efficient pump product – the first high efficiency glanded pump – and it’s targeted specifically at the building services and industry sectors. The Wilo-Stratos GIGA offers building designers, specifiers and architects the chance to easily optimise the energy costs and environmental balance of a building or industrial complex. With its hydraulic output and specification, the new Wilo- Stratos GIGA is ideal for commercial, industrial and residential buildings. These include universities and colleges, schools, office blocks, hotels, conference centres, factories, prisons, hospitals, primary care centres – in essence, any new building where energy consumption and emissions need to be reduced and any existing building where the current pumps are elderly, uncontrolled pumps, consuming far more electricity than they should in the current energy climate. It’s the first pump from Wilo’s new high efficiency series for heating, cold water and cooling applications, and it’s targeted at projects where energy saving pumps will pay significant dividends over a typically fifteen year lifecycle.
www.wilo.co.uk New from Rinnai
Rinnai’s unique condensing technology on its heavy duty condensing continuous flow water heaters incorporates two heat exchangers to achieve optimum water heating generated from every cubic
metre of natural gas or LPG, capturing residual heat from their flue gases and transferring it into the water being heated. Available in both internal and external versions, HDC1200i gives end users 107% net efficiency because the condensing process delivers up to 97% thermal efficiency, translating to significant energy savings when compared to standard tankless water heaters; the HDC1500i turns in 105% net efficiency.
The smart digital controller regulates the pre-set temperature within +/- 1°C of the set point, irrespective of the number of outlets opened. All models have full electronic ignition with no pilot light and operate on demand only, consuming no gas when not in use.
The units are renewables-ready (suitable for use as a temperature booster for solar thermal and heat-pump) and can be easily configured in a manifold arrangement, ensuring you will never run out of hot water whatever the demand. As long as electricity, water, and gas supplies are connected, hot water is available.
www.rinnaiuk.com Sleek and stylish luminaires
Spectral has announced the UK launch of its ultra-efficient and architecturally stylised pendant luminaires, ESTRA- Pendant and a revised PLAFOU design. Suited to office environments for VDU
compatible direct/indirect lighting, PLAFOU and ESTRA incorporate slight design profiles to fit with contemporary, minimal interiors.
Both the PLAFOU and ESTRA models are sleek and minimal suspended luminaires with the PLAFOU radiating light from within through transparent panels whilst ESTRA is finished with clean aluminium surround giving it a contrasting look.
“The Spectral brand is becoming well known for its exemplary attention to detail and design and with these new pendants that standard is maintained,” says Mike Attard, Managing Director of RIDI UK. “However, this is certainly not a case of style over substance as these fittings work extremely efficiently and are fully VDT compliant.” PLAFOU’s minimal and transparent housing cocoons the internal technical components of the luminaire to radiate light from within creating an uninterrupted light source. The transparency of the fitting showcases the apparent weightless nature of the luminaire and the detailed linear styling combines Spectral’s design flair with a high LOR for outstanding economy.
www.spectral-lighting.co.uk New range from Climaveneta
The NX range of scroll compressor liquid chillers from Climaveneta UK combines excellent energy efficiency with a compact design and a choice of models to suit a range of applications. These include shell and tube or plate heat exchanger options, as well as low noise or super-low noise versions and units with partial heat recovery. Cooling capacities range from 159kW to 352kW.
Shell and tube heat exchanger models are available in K versions with standard efficiency or CA versions with Eurovent Class A energy rating (measured in compliance with EN 14511) and electronic expansion valves to provide optimum efficiency at variable loads. NX chillers with partial heat recovery feature a refrigerant/water heat exchanger added to the gas discharge line on every refrigerant circuit, providing sufficient heat recovery for hot water production at medium to high temperatures. All models feature built-in hydronic units and use microchannel aluminium condenser coils to minimise refrigerant volumes.
Climaveneta NX chillers are designed for ease of use, via the W3000SE compact controller with an intuitive interface and comprehensive LCD display of the multi-level menu.
www.climaveneta.com Maintenance is key
Shorts Environmental offers comprehensive planned maintenance, tailor made to suit actual customer requirements, as the key to optimum performance of all HVAC systems.
“Incorporating planned maintenance into the lifetime cost
of HVAC systems installations is essential if maximum energy efficiencies and subsequent lower running costs are to be achieved,” says Gareth Chappells, Customer Support Manager at Shorts Environmental.
Shorts Environmental is totally committed to first class quality installations of Gas Fired Absorption Heat Pumps and Chillers, together with all other renewable technologies to ensure the equipment operates to its maximum potential. However, says the company, successful high quality installation is obviously extremely important but only the beginning, if the full potential of the product is to be achieved.
“It cannot be stressed strongly enough that planned service maintenance is vital to maintaining the optimum efficiency of any HVAC system. It is especially important to take this on board given the current climate of rising energy costs, and a Government committed to radically reduce the nation’s Carbon Footprint by 2020. Inefficient plant increases energy consumption to meet demand and incurs higher running costs.”
www.shorts-env.co.uk Evomod is a first
One of the first companies to introduce modular boilers to the UK market back in 1978, Ideal Commercial Heating’s latest milestone is the Evomod, the brand’s first modular boiler to feature fully condensing technology. This new product has been designed to fulfil market demand, since well ahead of mandatory requirements, more and more businesses are realising the carbon and cost-saving benefits of high efficiency boilers.
The Evomod vastly widens the scope of Ideal’s modular offering, with outputs of up to 1,000kW now made possible. The 250kW modules can be stacked up to three units high in the steel frame for the most compact footprint with a maximum of four used together, and all combinations are delivered pre-assembled or can be re-assembled on-site. The compact dimensions of the single units (860mmH x 710mmW x 1340mmD) ensure easy site handling, and mean that awkward access is not an impediment to the use of a modular system, since they can be carried through a standard doorway with ease. With speedy installation and maintenance being key for contractors and owners, the Evomod offers the ideal solution.

www.fulton.co.uk Excellence in energy efficiency
A unique natural ventilation combination from Passivent and REHAU can provide a low energy cooling solution for the commercial market.
The Passivent/REHAU solution combines the former’s passive stack natural ventilation with the latter’s AWADUKT Thermo ground-air heat exchanger, and is particularly appropriate for buildings with deep floor plans and/or restricted external facades. Passivent’s natural ventilation uses inlets on exterior walls and/or windows to draw fresh air into the building, exhausting the used internal air through high level façade ventilators and/or roof mounted terminals. Where fresh air is required but there is no suitable exterior façade, the REHAU ground-air heat exchanger draws fresh air into the building through the ground and pumps it into the depths of the building via a low energy fan, simultaneously using the earth’s constant temperature of between 7-12° to pre-heat or pre-cool the incoming air, and relying on Passivent’s extracts to ensure a background ventilation requirement in line with Regulatory requirements.
In domestic environments, a Co-efficient of Performance (COP) of up to 50 can be achieved, with 20 realistic in commercial buildings.
www.passivent.com Alpha helps safeguard boilers
Compatible with its extensive range of energy efficient condensing boilers, Alpha has launched its Trace Heating Kit to help avoid boiler breakdown during the cold winter months.
The kit, which comprises a relay board, detecting wire and weather probe, helps protect against the effects of frozen condensate by detecting the exterior temperature and adjusting the boiler accordingly, ensuring the condensate pipe does not freeze and
cause the boiler to breakdown which can be both costly and time consuming to fix.
During last year’s cold snap, around 60,000 call-outs in
Yorkshire alone are said to have been made as a result of the cold weather causing this very problem. The simple installation of Alpha’s Trace Heating Kit would help avoid this problem from recurring; meaning the cost and inconvenience of needing repair work is eradicated. Steve Hopkins, Product Marketing Manager for Alpha said: “Our trace heating kit is compatible with our entire range of condensing boilers and can help to avoid the problems encountered during the cold months when frozen condensate can cause a boiler to shut down.”
