JAN 2012 EDITOR’S NOTE

As we welcome in the New Year I think we are all hopeful that 2012 will bring with it more good news than 2011 did.

Sadly it’s not all good news with the economy, but having weathered the storm so far I think most companies are in a good position to make the most of what this year has to offer.

The good news is that there continues to be an increasing amount of activity in the area of energy management. As fuel prices continue to rise, companies are becoming ever more energy savvy and, having learnt vital lessons over the last 12 months, are now starting to take the subject of energy saving more seriously.

There are numerous ways to save energy which range from simply turning off lights to the installation of a full building management system, but whichever way you choose I think everyone will agree that the sooner the better.

The fact that the first CRC footprint report has revealed that large companies still have huge potential for energy savings would suggest that there is still a lot of work to be done – but at the same time it

seems that we are at least heading in the right direction.

In addition, the funding model developed by the Government to support the uptake of renewable technologies and sustainable solutions means that the focus is still very much on achieving our energy efficiency targets and as a result we can expect to see a lot of movement in this area.

I think we all hoped to see a major upturn in the economy in 2012 but we can’t do anything to change that so we have to look at ways of driving down carbon emissions and saving energy in order to reduce our costs.

This isn’t an easy task but it is one which we must embrace in order to make the necessary changes. As an industry we have met and overcome many challenges in the past few years so now let’s work towards the next one.

See you next month Tracey
