SERVICES SPOTLIGHT This month: Axis Animation

AXIS ANIMATION is a Scottish studio that specialises in the animation for trailers, commercials and cut scenes. Founded in 2000, the company now has a

45-strong work force and its success has led to the creation of sister company Flaunt, established in 2009, that specialises in characters, comedy and humour for a more family oriented market. Axis has worked on games such as Mass

Effect 2, GRID, Brink and Killzone, but it is perhaps best known for its work on the famous Dead Island trailer, winning awards, such as the Develop Visual Outsourcer accolade last June, and industry-wide critical acclaim for its efforts. Such was the success of the Dead Island

trailer, Axis executive producer Richard Scott says that it has led to the company striking new deals in the industry, as well as being picked up by Ridley Scott’s Little Minx/RSA Films for commercial directing. Despite being based in Scotland, the studio

claims to do most of its work for US companies. Scott explains its success across the pond comes down to the quality of its service and taking advantage of opportunities that have arisen over the years. “Once you have your first opportunity and

you offer a great creative service and have a good time making it happen, then the recommendations start,” says Scott. As well as production on large projects, Scott says the company also recognises the

need to work on smaller titles with the industry shifting away from big games and studios, particularly in the UK. “Different types of games need different

types of marketing and promotion, but we are still firm believers that they do need to be marketed so we’ve been speaking to developers about those types of titles and how we could help them create content,” explains Scott.

Going forward Axis is planning to develop its capabilities with real-time engines, such as the tech used in 007 Bloodstone’s cut scenes. “This is an area we see for growth, our clients

are requesting it and we are now building a team to specialise in that area. The good news for clients is that they still get access to all the great Axis directors and will have a dedicated team who are specialists in real-time.” www.axisanimation.com
