Bahrain Royal Maternity Hospital wins ‘Best hospital design – future’ award at Hospital Build Exhibition and Congress 2011

The project submission clearly highlights design characteristics to explain the vision/inspiration behind

the project as well as show innovation, adaptability and place making features. The project places both patient and the environment at the heart of project and hence received the overall first place in this category.” Ted Jacob, judge - Hospital Build 2011 Awards

THREE dEsign pRinCiplEs The conception of the Bahrain Royal Maternity Hospital is based on three essential design principles:

 Determine an architectural expression for the building which is innovative and contemporary but at the same time discrete and in harmony with the surrounding landscape and environment  Create a sequence of beautiful internal spaces and internal gardens that provoke a sense of calm, well-being and seclusion for the mothers to be and their families  Propose a building with a medical organisation and layout permitting the

highest level of care for the occupants of this project and the future phases. An over-sailing sculptural roof will

influence the project in many aspects - The roof will cover the building and car

park to protect them from the sun and sand storms. Technical spaces and unsightly plant rooms will be hidden under the undulations permitting the building to offer a pure and uncompromising form. The roof surface will be perforated with an abstract Arabic motif to allow light and air to penetrate the building where required. Solar protection and using airflow generated between the roof and the building blocks to cool the building down will significantly reduce the energy consumption of the project.

THE sEnsE of spaCE The project is organised around three elliptical internal gardens, each with a different character. The landscaping and interior design of the building transforms the feeling of being in a hospital into a sense of being in an elegant hotel of luxury domestic environment, all maximising the health and security of the mother and newborn.
