EDITORIAL It takes entrepreneurial courage

Well, wasn’t it a great show? If you don’t know what I am talking about, then you must be one of the few that did not make it to Fastener Fair Stuttgart – in which case all I can say is what kept you from the Europe’s biggest and best fastener industry event? For a taste of what you missed take a look at our report starting on page 52.

T

here was one familiar face missing this year, of course: that of Jerry Ramsdale who founded the Fastener Fair in 1995 and sold his business last year to Mack Brooks Exhibitions. While I heard many, unquestionably justified,

plaudits for how Mack Brooks had further developed and polished the show, it was rewarding that most who commented were also keen to recognise the remarkable entrepreneurship that lifted a relatively small UK show into the phenomenon that Stuttgart has become. Jerry would be the first to say it took a dedicated team and hard work to achieve that success (and he’d be right!) but, as always in entrepreneurship, the risk sat firmly on one set of shoulders – a level of personal business courage that, in my mind, fully deserves that recognition.

Anti-dumping update As, or fairly soon after, you read this it will become clear

whether the EU and/or China will have lodged an appeal against the WTO Panel Report on the carbon steel fastener anti- dumping regulation. The appeal deadline is 25th

March. We will

be keeping a close eye on proceedings and will, of course, report it at www.fastenerandfixing.com

Meanwhile, the timeframe for the European Commission’s

decision on possible exemptions for Malaysian exporters scrutinised under the Circumvention Investigation has become clearer. While this magazine has not been able to elicit a formal response from the Commission it understands that Malaysian companies will be advised during March of the outcome of the investigatory visits carried out over the last few weeks. However, confirmation of exemptions, assuming there will be any, will not be published in the EU Official Journal until some when in April. It also looks highly probable that the Commission will shortly

announce an anti-dumping investigation on stainless steel fasteners from Malaysia and the Philippines, plus anti-dumping and anti-subsidy investigations on stainless steel fasteners from India. The announcement has been expected since the EIFI’s withdrawal of its complaint against Malaysia and India last year. Anti-dumping measures on stainless fasteners from Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia expired last November. At the same time the Commission confirmed the continuation of measures against China and Taiwan subject to an Expiry Review expected to conclude in November this year. Once again keep an eye on www.fastenerandfixing.com for more.
