notes From the Executive Director T 8

HE FIRST DECADE OF THE NEW millennium was a momentous one for diversity in the legal sector. Not only have women and people of color established a greater presence in the legal suites of corporate, government and nonprofit organizations around the country, but lawyers with disabilities, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender lawyers also

have become more visible and accepted. Like many of you, MCCA views the beginning of a

new decade as a time to pursue new opportunities. We hope you like our magazine’s fresh new design. In addition to reviewing our enhanced graphic presence, we invite you to check out “Te Scale,” our new column rating news sto- ries in terms of their impact on diversity. MCCA also plans to launch new programs in 2011—like our new Tree People, Tree Perspectives conversation series, and our Firm Affiliate Network—and we are giving the National Diversity Honors Gala a dramatic makeover. MCCA will continue to be a leading advocate for

diversity as well as a valued resource for employers seeking to embrace diversity as a management imperative. We also remain dedicated to supporting attorneys’ efforts to main- tain the highest of professional standards as they navigate through their careers. Consistent with that obligation, we are proud to continue offering the prestigious Lloyd M. Johnson Jr. Scholarship Program, just one example of how our organization nurtures emerging talent. Diversity & Te Bar allows MCCA to regularly

showcase the achievements of those companies, law firms, and individual attorneys who are living the professional commitment to diversity that we encourage others to emulate. For this edition, our feature on Starwood Hotel & Resorts Worldwide demonstrates how one global enterprise is meshing its commitment to diversity with its dedication to providing high-quality hospitality around

the world. We are also pleased to profile Baltimore attorney Andy Levy whose love of the law and commitment to social justice inspires lawyers of all abilities. Our overview of the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association’s Best Under 40 celebrates the contribution this stellar group of attorneys is making to our profession. In addition to celebrating contemporary standard bearers, we hope you’ll also be moved by our story on 19th century legal pioneer Robert Morris, whose tireless work forged the legal basis of abolition and the Civil Rights Movement. As always, we invite your feedback and welcome ideas

about how the association can continue to support your efforts to reshape our profession so that it that better serves this great nation. Justice Turgood Marshall once said, “We can always stay together when we’re losing, but tend to find means of breaking up when we’re winning.” Te diversity momentum gathered since the turn of the century has yielded a bountiful harvest, but there is still much to be done. MCCA is resolved to ensure that our mandate and our solidarity continue.
