This TIP allows calculation of air changes for either ventilation, or to establish a certain air flow thru a space. Air changes are the amount of air required to completely replace the air in a room or building.
Basic Formula: Air Changes/Hour= CFM X 60 Minutes Cubic feet of space
Example: Existing 200 cfm fan in a 2000 cu ft room. How many Air Changes (AC) per Hour (HR) are developed?
AC/HR = 200 cfm x 60 min = 6 air changes per hour 2000 cu ft
To solve for CFM, the formula becomes: Air Changes/Hour X Cubic feet of space = CFM X 60 MIN
And then to Cubic feet of space X Air Changes/hour= CFM 60 minutes
Example: Required 8 AC/HR in a 1000 cu ft room. What cfm is required?
cu ft of room x AC/HR = 1000 x 8 = 133 cfm reqd. 60 min
60 Proceede to check the results against ASHRAE standards to determine if the air changes are acceptable for the application.
