West led the king and then the ace of hearts. South ruffed in dummy and took the A-K of trumps. He next led a diamond to his king and returned a club to dummy’s ten. East pro- duced the queen, cashed his high trump and led his last heart. South ruffed in dummy but was stuck there; he lost a club to West’s king for down one. “You mishandled the
trumps,” North growled. South cited statistics.
“The queen will usually fall under the A-K,” he insisted. West, who opened the bidding, will have at least one club honor. South can afford a trump loser but needs entries to his hand for two club finesses. After South takes the ace of trumps, he should lead a low trump. If East wins and leads
a third heart, South ruffs with the king and draws trumps with his jack. He loses a club finesse but later comes to the king of diamonds to finesse in clubs again. DAILY QUESTION You hold: ♠ A K 8 7 4 ♥ Q ♦ A Q 8 ♣ A J 10 6 You open one spade,
your partner bids 1NT, you jump to three clubs and he tries three diamonds. What do you say? ANSWER: Your partner
has fewer than 10 points, but slam is likely. He may hold 3, A 7 6 5, K 10 9 5 4 2, 7 4. Since your jump- shift forced to game, you can take it easy by rais- ing to four diamonds. An option is a “splinter” jump to four hearts, showing diamond support and heart shortness.
