"Have enough courage to trust love one more time, and always one more time!" Maya Angelou

March 5, 1943 - June 4, 2010

Joanie Rainwater of Alexandria, VA passed from this mortal coil in the twilight hour of June 4, 2010. As has been her wish, she died in her own bed, surrounded by adoring family and her most beloved cat, Raul. She fought a valiant battle against cancer with dignity and courage, never losing sight of her spiritual principles. She was born March 5, 1943 in Tennessee to Robert Morse (deceased) and Lucille Morse (now Wilson) of Tennessee.

She settled in the lovely town of Occoquan. VA in the summer of 1966, with her then husband, Ray, to raise their children in a warm, inviting small-town atmosphere. Joanie, having a grand flair for decorating. ultimately discovered her hidden talent for art and created many beautiful and cherished pieces of work over her career. She briefly owned her own gallery where she enjoyed the companionship of like-minded artists many of whom became her life-long friends. Joanie was an avid journal keeper and published poet.

After 30 years of being a loved and well- respected resident of Occoquan, she finally surrendered to the charm of Old Town Alexan- dria and moved from the banks of the Occoquan River to those of the Potomac. She loved to walk in the early morning along the rivers of her life and to watch the world wake up over the sparkling sunlit water. She was a devoted and beloved mother to her children, Randy Rainwater (deceased), Linda Coffman of Loton, VA, Karen Rainwater of Bosie, ID, Steven Rainwater of Lorton, VA and Robin Asselin of Virginia Beach, VA. She was the adored nana of Matthew M. Jenkins of Woodbridge, VA; cherished sister to Larry Sinor of Tennessee, Joyce Grivas of Tennessee and Karen Sue Smith of Vienna, VA, and she was a doting auntie to her nieces and nephews, Paul Milde of Stafford, VA, Veronica Johnsen of Michigan, Paul Carson of Tennessee, Elizabeth Pyke of Tennessee, RebeccaWolf of Manassas, VA and Robbie Sinor of Maryland.

Almost to the person, all of Joanie's friends remarked that she was their "BEST" friend, and it stands as a testament to her great capacity for love and attentiveness to every one she cared for. She came to all of her relationships with her heart and her mind wide open. One always walked away from a day with Joanie feeling loved and understood. There is a brighter star in the sky tonight. and we will always be grateful for the time she graced our lives with her vibrant light. We love you Joanie and we miss you with all our hearts.

Her Life Celebration Memorial will be held on June 27, at 2 p.m. at Hearst Hall Auditorium on the grounds of the National Cathedral, corner of Woodley & Wisconsin Ave., N.W. There is free underground parking on Wisconsin and plenty of side street parking. please feel free to email pictures of yourself with Joanie to Robin @: robinandmark@aol.com to be included in the memorial DVD.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, he was a true southern gentleman, devoted to his family, God and country, and an avid tennis player. He was a dedicated public servant who worked for the federal government for 36 years, retiring in 1970 from his position as Assistant Director of the Secret Service. He had been recruited, following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, to establish an Office of Adminis- tration to strengthen the Secret Service’s administrative functions. Previously, he worked for the Department of Agriculture, the Office of Emergency Management, the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Agency, War Assets Administration, and the General Services Administration. He told a young interviewer last year that in his view, “it is a high profession and privilege to serve the public”. He attended Georgia Tech in Atlanta, and received a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Georgia at Athens, Georgia, where he was a member of the Chi Phi Fraternity. He received a Bachelor of Laws Degree from the George Washington University in 1963. Following his retirement from govern- ment, he practiced law for eight years in Washington, DC. During this time, he and three other distinguished lawyers founded the International School of Law (ISL) with the intent of training lawyers dedicated to the moral practice of law. In 1980, ISL became the George Mason School of Law.
