SNOWBOARD TEAM IS ROCKING AND ROLLING ON EDUCATIONAL INITIATIVES AND OUTREACH
By Jeb Boyd, with Scott Anfang T
he 2016-20 PSIA-AASI Team has wasted no time getting its bearings for its fi rst season of clinics, presentations, and collaboration as a unifi ed force of adaptive, alpine,
cross country, snowboard, and telemark instructors.
We've assembled a great group of educators to help hone the messages and materials developed for you and your fellow instructors. Here, in Coach's Corner, you've read updates from Alpine Team Coach Michael Rogan and Nordic Team Coach David Lawrence. In this issue, Snowboard Team Coach Scott Anfang shares what his team is doing.
WORKING ALL THE ANGLES By Scott Anfang
“So… what does the AASI Snowboard Team do?” As a team member I got this question a lot and now as the team’s coach I get it even more. My basic reply is that we create, develop, and shape snowsports education for America, to which the typical response is, “Wow, that sounds important and cool.” Yes, it is important and cool… so here’s a
bit more information about what we're up to. As of this writing, members of the team (which consists of myself, Nick Alfi eri, Amy Gan, Tony Macri, Brennan Metzler, Chris Rogers, and Eric Rolls) have taken part in clinics or other education events in 7 of the 9 divisions and hope to hit the other two before season’s end. A few of us have also been working on
foreign soil, notably in China where PSIA- AASI’s student-centered teaching approach, instructional expertise, training materials, and

exam process are stimulating a lot of interest. T is foreign outreach supports the suppliers in the global snowsports industry, showcases skiing and riding in the U.S. as destination activities, and creates new revenue opportunities for our organization. It also forges work opportunities for our members while strengthening international relationships.
CONNECTING ON LEARNING
And I have to say the work going into PSIA-AASI’s Learning Connection – which emphasizes the technical, teaching, and people skills involved in snowsports instruction – has been amazing. T is model was one of the great contributions of the previous PSIA-AASI Team, and now we’re developing it even further. T is will serve as an excellent tool
for instructors throughout their entire certifi cation/educational process. It’s also a great resource for clinic leaders and examiners to use when giving feedback. When all disciplines work off the same platform, it becomes easier to train instructors in multiple disciplines, strengthening PSIA-AASI and adding great value to our member schools.
OUT FRONT WITH OUTREACH
Getting out in front of people – whether serving as clinic leaders for members or
promoting PSIA-AASI to the general public – is also an important part of what we do. We’ve been involved with presentations at Team Training and Fall Conference and done interviews with snowsports journalists on a wide range of topics. We’ve even had opportunities to work with coaches outside of PSIA-AASI, ski and snowboard tour operators, and snowboard clubs. Team members are also reaching out to
you and your fellow instructors through 32 Degrees – with articles on topics ranging from crossover summer sports, history, and culture to riding focuses on boardercross, steeps, ollies, and corn. We’ve contributed to various webposts, been active on PSIA-AASI’s social media platforms, and also produced content for an outside organization that’s producing teaching manuals for ski and snowboard simulators. T is team is also motivated to see if the Rider Rally can be reincarnated. Similar to the event's origins as a grassroots riding session, the team is gathering this spring – May 2-5 – at Colorado's Arapahoe Basin. T e format is simple. We plan to spend time riding together and would like to invite association members to join in the fun. We're creating a Facebook event page to provide more details and a way to track who is interested in this posse ride at A-Basin, so stay tuned. To bring it back to the original question
of what we do as a team, you can see the answer is “not much.” Just kidding! T ere’s a lot going on, and we hope you’re there to enjoy it with us!
