Extra credit assignment: Try using discipline-neutral tips in your lessons. If you’re the kind of instructor who speaks both alpine and snowboard, and might have both types of students in the same lesson, or your clients both ski and ride, then they can transfer knowledge from one discipline to another. Using statements that could apply to both disciplines may help them adopt new movements by applying what they already know WR D GLff HUHQW WHFKQLTXH RQ GLff HUHQW HTXLSPHQW ([DPSOHV LQFOXGH Ȋ0RYH DFURVV \RXU edge(s) progressively to enter the new turn more smoothly,” and “Look ahead to aid balance and anticipate changes in snow and terrain.”

I have to chuckle at the titles of the PSIA alpine and nordic manuals from the '70s: Alpine Skiing Right and Cross Country Skiing Right. While attitudes and equipment have changed in the last three decades, some things remain the same – simple word choices can harbor hidden meaning. It’s important to understand how your words might be interpreted and their eff ect on our guest’s experiences. Using objective

language can actually help us reach our students better. Whether it’s an elite athlete or a never-ever beginner, the language of positive prescription can help clients gain more direct access to the eff ective and effi cient movements that will help them achieve outcomes they desire.

J. ScottMcGee coached the PSIA Nordic Team from 2008 to 2016, and currently directs the mountain sports school at Wyoming's Snow King Resort. A former Telemark competitor, he now dreams of perfect corn on spring backcountry skate-ski

tours. Scott spends

his summers guiding climbs in the Tetons for Exum Mountain Guides.
