n its broadest expression, manufacturing is ‘infrastructure’ for global lifestyle demands. Shelter, clothes, medicine, food, phones, cars, fuel, electricity, etc. are all manufactured prod- ucts that are personalized at the point of use. Lifestyle demands on earth’s resources and the environment also require manufac- turing to be globally responsive. There are parallels to healthcare. Demand for products, made the best ways for an individual’s need, is like a patient expecting the best, individualized treatment at the right time for improved health. Next-generation healthcare and Advanced Manufacturing are both in transformation, industries with changing individual and global demands and new opportunities with next genera- tion IT and Internet thinking. Smart Health (SH) gives us useful perspective into Smart Manufacturing (SM). Today, manufacturing’s ‘healthcare plan’ refl ects a ‘treatment- based’ economy where material, energy and the making of products are transacted through manufacturing operations that are like unconnected treatment centers. Tomorrow’s SM ‘plan’ refl ects much greater precision, access, prevention, interoper- ability, safety, sustainability and dynamic management of ‘treat- ments’ with substantially greater outcome-specifi c objectives for each treatment and their connected effects. A manufactured product or material builds greater value and


quality through an SM information connected value chain of op- erations, like a patient going through a next-generation healthcare and treatment regimen managed with advanced, comprehensive SH services. A dynamically optimized ‘ecosystem’ of treatments orchestrated with data and information in a facility and across clinics, specialty centers, hospitals, etc. is like the optimized line operations within a manufacturer and the agile, innovative small- medium-large manufacturer confi gurations that are organized for demand-dynamics, customer specialization, and point of delivery. There are high expectations for quality, value, health and speed. Greater requirements for defi ned and predictable cross-operation interoperability within and across manufacturers are like predicting and maximizing the benefi t of integrated treatments and minimiz- ing cross-treatment effects. There is zero tolerance for incidents and economics are critical. Market, product and environmental objectives are facilitated by increased quality of value add features,

velocity of delivery, increased productivity, ‘process intensifi cation’ and enterprise interoperability. Internet-based, SM technologies are referenced as Advanced Sensing, Control, Platforms and Modeling in Manufacturing (ASCPMM). SM defi nes how ASCPMM is applied to achieve business and operating goals. For individual operations, SM transforms asset management, operational effectiveness and manufacturing modernization much like the transformational strides with sensors, analytics, diagnostics and the use of aggre- gated patient data for more targeted treatments that are faster, have less risk and improve health outcomes.


Next-generation healthcare and Advanced Manufacturing are seizing new opportunities offered by IT.


The ‘Platform’ in ASCPMM is the healthcare operating system for manufacturing, providing infrastructure in which data can be coalesced into an enterprise asset and made action- able through a myriad of affordable and innovative applications regardless of company size. For cross-operation and supply chain needs, the SM Platform facilitates sharing critical data and information like a clinical system while protecting privacy and IP. Product tracking and traceability is analogous to using the patient record for better, history-based diagnostics. Like being warned about drug interactions, there is great value in setting up preventive systems that help to optimize treatment and enter- prise performance. With trust that information is private, secure and owner-managed, agile value chains can be optimized for dynamically customized products, material use and managed energy. Data and information are at the right place and time and in the right format for optimizing enterprises, end-to-end. Ultimately, Smart Manufacturing makes small, medium and large


manufacturers more competitive by allowing them to become value- based and responsive to demand-driven markets; achieve sub- stantially increased productivity, performance and innovation agility; accelerate technology adoption; and radically improve environmental sustainability, by improving material and energy productivity.
