FOR BETTER HEALTH KOHLRABI - Should Be in Every Garden.


A member of the cabbage family. Prefers cool weather. Does best in a rich, well- drained loam. For an early crop, sow seed 1 in. apart, 1/2 in. deep, as soon as the soil can be worked. Cultivate the same as cabbage. Sow again in mid-summer for a fall crop, in rows about 18 in. apart. Later thin plants to 5 in. apart in rows. Harvest when the bottom of the bulb reaches 2 to 3 in. in diameter. Prepare for the table in the same way as turnips. Allow 2 weeks for germination. A packet sows 40 ft. of row; 1 oz. sows about 300 ft.


Culture.


The edible part of kohlrabi is a large bulb grown on a stem just above the ground. When the bulb is young, no more than 2-1/2 in. across, the fl esh has a sweet, mild, turnip-like fl avor. It is a delicious vegetable, highly prized by many who appreciate the sweet, fi ne-grained fl esh.

KALE - Sow in Spring & Midsummer. Culture.


Sow seed 4 in. apart, 1/4 in. deep, as soon as the ground can be worked. Later, thin to 12 to 18 in. apart in rows 2 to 3 ft. apart. Light frost im- proves the fl avor. Sow in early spring and again in midsummer. One packet sows approximately 50 ft. of row; 1 oz. about 350 ft.


01405 DWARF BLUE CURLED SCOTCH. A very early, compact type that is particularly har- dy. Grows only 12 in. tall with leaves fi nely curled and blue-green in color. 02809 WHITE STEM. You can't go wrong … try PAK CHOY for only 95 cents. So many of our customers have never tried growing it, we thought we'd make it easier by pricing the seed at just 95 cents per packet. Often called "Bok Choy" in grocery stores, it’s very popu- lar for Oriental cooking, especially in stir-fries. Crispy, celery-like white stalks and rounded, glossy green leaves are delicious. Flavor is quite mild with just a hint of mustard. Good raw, too. Grows real fast, producing upright clusters of 6 to 12 stalks. Loves cool weather, so plant as ear- ly as you can work up the garden. Make suc- cessive small plantings one week apart for 3 weeks, then quit plant- ing to avoid maturity when the weather is too hot. Plant again in the fall when temperatures moderate. 45 days. Mesclun is a French term for a mixture of early, young leaves, greens and herbs. Expect to fi nd a collection of many different colors, textures and fl avors.
