FOR BETTER HEALTH MORE HYBRID SWEET CORN. Shumway’s Sensational Supersweet Series.
As the name implies, these varieties are especially sweet. These are all hybrids containing the sh2 endosperm gene which has been around since 1956 and has created a sweet corn revolution. The conversion of sugar to starch is considerably slower both on the stalk and after picking. Since the seeds are shriveled, there are substantially more seeds per pound. These varieties REQUIRE ISOLATION by at least 250 ft. in each direc- tion. Cross-pollination will seriously affect the eating quality. For good germination, plant the seeds after the soil has reached 80°F.
03922 ILLINI XTRA SWEET. Twice as sweet as the other hy- brids at harvest. Four times sweeter a few days after picking. Large 8 in. ears have 14 to 16 rows of rich, golden yellow kernels. Vigorous habit. Actually has 45% sugar content at harvest and maintains 40% sugar con- tent two days after harvest. No rush to freeze it. Excellent fresh, frozen or canned. Be certain soil is warm before planting. Isolate from other corns of the same maturity to prevent cross-pollination. 85 days. (A) Pkt. (150 seeds) $3.25; 2 pkts. $5.75; (C) 1,000 seeds $15.95; (E) 5,000 seeds $55.95.
03970 SUPER SWEET JUBILEE. Golden Jubilee (page 20) has long been king of the standard yellow corns. This one actu- ally grows 7 to 9 ft. tall bearing 8-1/2 to 9 in. ears with 16-18 rows of sugar-sweet, tender, crispy kernels that melt in your mouth. 87 days. (A) Pkt. (150 seeds) $3.45; 2 pkts. $5.95; (C) 1,000 seeds $16.95; (E) 5,000 seeds $57.95.
03950 NORTHERN XTRA SWEET. An improved variety of the extra sweet type, earlier and more tolerant to cool weather. 8 to 9 in. ears are uniform and have better husk protection for the 14 rows of tender kernels. In our most recent corn trials, Northern Extra Sweet was rated the most fl avorful of the early yellow corns. Excellent fresh, frozen and canned. Needs isolation. 63 days. (A) Pkt. (150 seeds) $3.45; 2 pkts. $5.95; (C) 1,000 seeds. $16.95; (E) 5,000 seeds $57.95.

Radiance produces beautiful 8 in. ears fi lled with crisp, juicy, sugar-sweet yellow and white kernels that are extra tender and delicious. Fully Sugary Enhanced Family.
Shumway’s is proud to offer American home gardeners the fi rst complete family of “Fully Sugary-En- hanced (se+)” Sweet Corn varieties, combining a remarkably tender kernel with unbelievably sweet fl avor that lasts up to 14 days after harvest.
Our se+ family, bred for us by Crookham Company of Idaho, is a second-generation hybrid cross between two varieties in our EH Series. The resulting se+ hybrid corn combines and improves on the best qualities of each:
• Much increased tenderness. Far more tender than any of our EH Series. • Improved sweetness. Sweetness equal to, or slightly more than, any other member of the EH Series. • Slow conversion of sugar to starch. Delayed conversion means you can pick your corn today, then wait up to two weeks before preparing it without any appreciable loss of its classic sweet fl avor! • Does not require isolation. Unlike our Supersweet Series, our se+ Series does not require isolation.
Shumway’s offers a complete family of Fully Sugary Enhanced (se+) sweet corns. Try all three this spring for a delicious experience in sweet corn eating!
