CRAFTY GARDENING GOURDS.


Ornamental and useful! Gourds are fun and profi table. Use them to make birdhouses, dip- pers, bowls and pipes. Good for centerpieces and harvest arrangements. They need lots of sun. Train vines on a trellis or fence. Cut when ripe, leaving a 3 in. stem, wash and dip in alcohol to remove any fungus. Give plenty of time to cure. A packet plants about 30 ft.

Culture.


Do not allow to freeze before planting. After separating the garlic bulb into traditional cloves, plant the cloves 5 in. apart in well-prepared and well-drained soil in a sunny location. Plant deeply enough so that the tips are 2 in. beneath the surface. Mulch lightly in areas where winter temperatures fall below 0°F. Garlic will be ready to harvest the following summer. Plant with the thick end up, upright or horizontally, about 18 in. apart. Horseradish is a peren- nial, but many gardeners replant every 3 to 5 years, as old roots tend to get woody. Zones 4-8.
