THE REAL POWER OF ONENESS

olitics can be divisive. Check your Facebook news feed today, and you’ll likely encounter ugly arguments among friends surrounding the presidential election. But politics also can be galvanizing.

The fi ght to end early recruiting, for example, has inspired unprecedented collaboration between college women’s and men’s lacrosse coaches — two groups that historically have gone their separate ways. As a result, legislation that would ban contact with prospects before Sept. 1 of their junior year has real hope (“Forging Forward,” page 12). When the IWLCA introduced the

proposal a year ago, the IMLCA did not hesitate to support it. US Lacrosse provided additional backing.

Unifying efforts, these three lacrosse heavyweights convinced the NCAA Division I Council not only to recommend the legislation for the 2016-17 cycle, but also to reinsert a crucial clause regarding phone contact. What if more lacrosse entities joined forces like this? What if MLL and NLL collaborated more closely to better leverage their promotional efforts? What if rec leagues and clubs worked together so youth players did not have to choose one over the other? What if equipment manufacturers became partners rather than adversaries in research and development? What if college, high school and youth lacrosse leaders put aside their own interests and agreed on an appropriate pipeline for player development?

In cooperating to curb a damaging practice that now sees 14-year-olds committing to colleges, the IWLCA and IMLCA have provided a blueprint for the responsible and sustained growth of our sport. We’re better together.

2 LACROSSE MAGAZINE » September/October 2016 LM VAULT MISSION

ACCOMPLISHED SEPTEMBER 1986

Thirty years ago, the U.S.

men’s national team took the senior fi eld world championship, beating Canada 18-9 in the championship across the border in Toronto. For head coach Dave Urick and company, it was “Mission Accomplished,” the headline read on the inside of Lacrosse Magazine. Canada, at the time, was a surprise fi nalist, according to “many lacrosse pundits,” the

story read, and beat Australia 17-14 for a spot in the title game. The win set up a rematch of the 1978 championship game, won by Canada 17-16 in double overtime. This fi nal eight years later wasn’t nearly as close. A ferocious U.S. ride combined with Canada’s miscues using a 10-man ride of its own told some of the tale. The Canadians allowed a 45-yard goal to Norm Engelke and then consecutively a Randy Natoli 60-yarder and Engelke 65-yarder to go down 10-3 before halftime. The fi nal: 18-9. — Corey McLaughlin
