A third-generation Hall of Famer, Mike Morrill embraced his


family’s lacrosse legacy

Mike Morrill wasn’t alive to watch his father play lacrosse, but he would learn soon enough the weight his surname carried in the lacrosse community.


A Baltimore native, Morrill latched onto the sport under the guidance of his father, Bill Morrill Jr., a three- time first-team All-American at Johns Hopkins and 1978 inductee to the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame. He shagged errant shots as a ball boy at Johns Hopkins games at Homewood Field, the place where his grandfather, 1962 Hall of Fame inductee Kelso Morrill, helped lead the Blue Jays to three national titles in 15 years. It was only fitting that Mike Morrill committed to Johns Hopkins to continue his lacrosse journey. Fans he had never met would stop him after games.

“I’d be walking off the field, and there would be a 75-year-old or 80-year-old guy,” he said. “He’d grab me and say, ‘When I played with


your grandfather,’ or ‘Your grandfather taught me at Hopkins.’ I embraced and loved that. That drove me.” By 1985, it was Mike’s turn to reprise the Morrill legacy at Homewood. He became a two-time All- American, leading the Blue Jays to the 1987 NCAA title. Then, he starred for Mount Washington Club Lacrosse and two gold medal-winning U.S. national teams in 1990 and 1994. On Sept. 10, Mike Morrill will join his father and grandfather among all-time lacrosse greats. Bill Morrill Jr. will be there for his son, making the Morrills the first family to span three generations in the Hall of Fame.
