How a revelation at Tufts helped spawn the run-and- gun revival of college lacrosse

BY PATRICK STEVENS R

yan Lukacovic and Michael Rhoads ascended a Colorado mountain in mid- June as part of a cross-country biking trip. With a memorable view in front of them, the Virginia lacrosse teammates got exciting news: Lars Tiffany — and the revival of an explosive, up-tempo approach to lacrosse — was coming to Charlottesville.

“It put a smile on our faces for the rest of the day,” Lukacovic said.

They weren’t the only ones grinning. The system Tiffany and assistants Sean Kirwan and Kip Turner bring to Virginia transformed Brown from a mid-pack Ivy League outfit into an NCAA semifinalist in two years. Kirwan learned the scheme while playing and coaching under Mike Daly, who led Tufts to three Division III titles before taking the Brown job Tiffany vacated. Brown was part of a dazzling Memorial Day weekend in May, even prodding Maryland — Maryland! — into a riveting 15- 14 overtime classic. The Bears didn’t win the day, but their style sure did. If a previously unheralded Division III program could transform itself into a national power and Brown could reach the NCAA semifinals for the first time in 22 years, what could the mighty Cavaliers accomplish with this throwback philosophy? It’s an inevitable-though-belated response to stylistic changes from two decades ago.
