2016 U.S. ADULT CHAMPIONSHIPS

the theme song from Saw, highlighted by impressive speed and diffi cult transitions, including a lunge into a back camel spin. Hinojos (Tucson FSC) has been skating for 14 years and competed at his fi rst U.S. Adult Championships in 2010. “I just love doing this,” Hinojos said.

“I live in Tucson and I have to travel to Phoenix just to skate, which is an hour drive each way, so I must really enjoy it. I even tried quitting once, but I just can’t. It’s addictive.” Both Ian McCutcheon (St. Moritz

ISC) and Ken Nguyen (Red Rose FSC) earned 4/3 majorities for their performanc- es, but it was McCutcheon who ultimate- ly prevailed as the event’s bronze medalist with his “Harry Potter” program, breaking the tie with higher ordinals from the judges — one of whom put him in fi rst place. “I was excited to do this event,” Mc-

Cutcheon said. “I kept this program an- other year because I knew they were hold- ing championship silver competition this year and I wanted to do the best job that I could. It wasn’t the very best I’ve ever done the program, but I’m defi nitely happy with what I did.” Nguyen earned the pewter, rounding

out the inaugural medalists with a joyful performance to “Blindfolded” by Kris Al- len.

SURVEY SAYS Adult skaters are immersed

in the sport they love A recently completed survey reaffi rms just how

active the adult skating community is in the sport, outside of its competitive arena. T e Adult Skating Committee completed two

phases of research documenting and quantifying the many ways in which adult skaters give back to their clubs and to U.S. Figure Skating. It received more than 500 completed surveys from competitive adult skaters (including adult synchronized skaters) about their volunteer activities. “We really want to highlight and lift up all of

these great things that adults are doing for the sport, so that everyone is aware of it,” Adult Skating Chair Jason Spicer said of the survey. “But we also want other adults to be aware that they, too, can get in- volved and that U.S. Figure Skating wants you.” Competitive adult skaters serve as judges, ac-

countants, technical panel members, club board mem- bers, test chairs, competition local organizing commit- tee (LOC) chairs and in various other volunteer roles. “T ere are a lot of paths for people to use their

diff erent skills to give back to the sport, and a lot of people do this already,” Spicer said. “What we found through the survey is that there are tremen- dous numbers of adults serving in all these capac- ities for the sport, and that they are really the life

blood of a lot of local activity.” T e survey results, Spicer said, probably un-

dercount the volunteer activity and donations of time and money off ered by adult skaters, because the survey was sent only to those on record as com- petitive adult skaters. “T ere are a lot of people we are not able to

track, who are also volunteering,” he said. BY THE NUMBERS
