It was all smiles and cheers for Regan Alsup (Detroit SC) as she claimed gold with a score of 57.06. “Tis in particular has been a fun one because I grew

up in Michigan,” Alsup said. “Coming home, getting to see old friends and visit my old rink has been really fun.” Skating to “Ain’t No Sunshine” and Etta James’ “At

Last,” Alsup fired off a slew of double jumps, including a double Axel-double toe combination, expressing the music until her very last pose. “I was really happy that I got the Axel combo out

there,” Alsup said. When she’s not skating, she works as a video produc-

er for the nonprofit Discovery Learning Alliance, making educational videos for schools in Africa. She also works with young skaters at her local rink. “I’ve also started doing some choreography for some

younger kids; that’s been fun. It gets me to the rink more frequently, so I’m able to train more,” Alsup said. Teresa Kuehne (Heritage Skating Academy) won

the silver medal in her Adult Championships debut. Kuehne skates on a masters synchronized skating team and skated as a child, but wanted to give competing in singles a try.

“Everyone is so supportive,” Kuehne said. “It was definitely fun for my first time.” Kuehne netted 51.82 points for her routine, which

included two double Lutz jumps, one in combination with a single toe loop. Carly Harris-Koleczko (Mt. Clemens FSC) stood on

the third step of the podium. Harris-Koleczko, a coach in Michigan, earned 50.99 points — a personal-best score for her free skate. She was particularly happy that she nailed her double Lutz-double loop combination, a jump she missed at sectionals. “I love having goals and then working toward them,”

said Harris-Koleczko on why she competes as an adult. Prior to competing as an adult, Harris-Koleczko skat-

ed in professional shows at Busch Gardens and Sea World, and passed her senior free skate test five years ago. Pinar Gurel (Dartmouth College) earned the pewter

medal with 50.70 points. When she’s not hitting the ice, Gurel can be found completing her post-doctoral fellow- ship with the National Institutes of Health.
