2016 U.S. ADULT CHAMPIONSHIPS

CHAMPIONSHIP MASTERS JUNIOR-SENIOR MEN

Palmeri rides hometown support to title

by COLETTE HOUSE Repeat champion Daniel Palmeri (Onyx-Suburban

Skating Academy) set a high bar with his gold medal-win- ning performance to “Go the Distance” from Hercules and earned 73.89 points. In addition to a double Axel, Palmeri completed two

triple Salchows, one in combination with a double toe loop.

“I have a lot of fond memories of competing in this

rink when I was younger, so I didn’t feel the nerves I used to feel,” said Palmeri, who toured with Disney on Ice for six years. Palmeri, 26, lives just outside Ann Arbor and

said the support of family, friends and training mates made him feel at home while competing. “I feel like, yeah you still want to go out and

do your best, but you’re still supportive of every- one else in your flight,” Palmeri said. “It feels like we’re all on the same team.” Zachariah Szabo (Detroit SC) claimed the silver

medal with 57.98 points. His program, set to music from Cinema Paradiso, included two triple jumps: a triple toe and a triple loop, both of which received positive GOEs from the judges. Szabo said he was happy to showcase his triple jumps, a goal of his every year. “I think it was the best I skated all season,” Szabo

said. Grant Chien-Hao Huang (Kansas City FSC) gener-

ated 55.63 points for his program set to “Stand By Me,” “At Last” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.” He performed two double loop combina- tions: a double Lutz-double loop and a double Salchow-double loop. Huang didn’t let a case of strep throat

keep him out of the championships. His an- tibiotics kicked in just in time for him to compete in his dramatic event on Wednesday, which he won, and the championship masters junior-senior event. “Te supportive crowd, they’re amazing,” Huang

said. “When you feel like you can’t finish your program, that scream just keeps you going,” Huang said. Te top three medalists all teach skating as well as com-

pete. Palmeri is skating director at Onyx-Suburban Skating Academy and coaches while attending school for public re- lations. Szabo coaches at Center Ice Skating Club in North Canton, Ohio, and also teaches photography at the college level. Huang brought three of his adult students to compete in Ann Arbor. He says he always tells his skaters if he can compete, they can do it, too. Larry Holliday (Chicago FSC) earned the pewter

medal with a score of 49.10. 30 JUNE/JULY 2016 JAY ADEFF/U.S. FIGURE SKATING
