2016 U.S. ADULT CHAMPIONSHIPS

CHAMPIONSHIP MASTERS INTERMEDIATE-NOVICE LADIES

Championship masters intermediate-novice ladies podium (l-r) Rachel Reynolds, Rebecca Musick, Charlene Mills, Karissa Williams

No regrets for titlist Musick

by COLETTE HOUSE Rebecca Musick (individual member) claimed

gold after delivering an elegant and heartfelt perfor- mance to “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina” from the soundtrack to Evita. “It was a great skate today,” said Musick, who

trains under Jeff Crandell in California. “I went in for a few lessons and he said, ‘You should try for adult nationals, it’d be so fun.’ I’ve been hooked ever since.”

Musick netted 46.03 points for a program that

included two single toe combos: an Axel-toe and a double Salchow-single toe combination. “I try not to leave the ice with any regrets,”

Musick said. “I’ve skated this program sick and ev- ery time I try to make it clean run-throughs.” Musick splits her time between Twin Falls, Ida-

ho, and Fresno, California. When she’s near a rink, she coaches skating. She is also mother to two chil- dren, Dutch, 4, and Daphne, 20 months, who both skate.

Rachel Reynolds (Los Angeles FSC) secured

the silver medal, fewer than five points behind Mu- sick. Reynolds completed five double jumps and an Axel-loop-loop combination, en route to 41.18 points. “I wanted to dedicate my program to a friend

that passed away earlier in the year,” said Reynolds, who skated to Scheherazade. Charlene Mills (Salt Lake Figure Skating) was

happy with her bronze-medal skate. Mills lives too far away from the rinks in Salt Lake City to train with a coach full time, but that didn’t stop her from wanting to participate in the U.S. Adult Champion- ships. Instead, she studied the International Judging System (IJS) and trained herself. Her dedication to being her own coach paid

off with a score of 39.95 and a program that includ- ed two single Axels, one in combination with a toe loop, and three double jumps, including a double toe-single toe combination. “I love feeling like I’m flying on the ice,” said

Mills, who skates five to six times a week in Utah. Karissa Williams (Arctic FSC) won the pewter

medal with 36.84 points. She completed two dou- ble Salchows, one in combination with a single toe, during her “Great African Moments” and “Coming to America” routine.

“I like the fact that I get to see so many people

that I haven’t seen in so many years,” said Williams, whose last Adult Championships was in 2011 when her now-husband proposed to her in the kiss and cry. “It’s good to see old friends.”
