Stockton (California) Figure Skating Club members got to meet and skate with Olympic champion Brian Boitano, who was in town promot- ing his Nov. 9 holiday show, titled “Holiday Movie Skating Spectacular: Where Did They Film That? The Holiday Music Journey.” The show, to air this month on ABC, features Boitano, world champion Kimmie Meiss- ner, four-time U.S. medalist and world bronze medalist Caryn Kadavy, U.S. champion pairs skaters Caydee Denney and John Coughlin, eight- time British champion Steven Cousins, and two-time U.S. ice dance bronze medalists Kim Navarro and Brent Bommentre. The show is a celebration of the greatest holiday movies and holiday soundtracks of all time.

The Ann Arbor Figure Skating Club in Ann Arbor, Michigan, has purchased new walkers to help its therapeutic skaters improve their balance and skating skills. The club used part of its Prudential Skating Fund Enrich- ment Award to purchase the walk- ers. “Some of the skaters feel more comfortable using the walkers and we were able to improve their speed and glides,” Special Olympics Michi- gan Area 20 Coach Mary Johanson said. Some of the skaters were also able to do swizzles for the fi rst time after using the walkers to help them practice the foot and leg motion of the skill. Instructors, meanwhile, helped manipulate their feet in the development process. Johanson

has also used some of the funds to start the Therapeutic Competition Club. This group has attended sev- eral competitions in the Michigan Basic Skills Series. The club has paid half of their entry fees to encourage participation. The series wrapped up in November, with many skaters earning awards. The Ann Arbor FSC has 15 skaters who are now training to participate in the Special Olym- pics State Winter Games; it will take a fi gure skating team and a speed skating team to the event. Johanson held a training course last month in conjunction with Special Olympics Michigan to help and inform area clubs as to how to start their own programs.
