“It was 36 hours after a hard loss, and we definitely came out a little bit slow. But those sets were pretty tight, and we knew we weren’t playing our best volleyball. And we knew that if we made a few more plays and got a little bit better at serve and pass, we were going to win that next set and hopefully the match. We just played more to our scouting report and played more consistent, and we knew that they

were going to be resilient.” — U.S. hitter Taylor Sander on the bronze-medal match victory

I think it really took so much for us to come back and play after the disappointment of the Italian match (a loss in the semifinals). I was watching our guys in the first two sets … I could empathize with where they were. It was really, really hard. But before the match started, I had a pretty good suspicion that that would be the case and that we would have to go to our bench. I was prepared to do that early and did.
