BILLY ALLEN HAD a breakout season in 2016 at the age of 34. Allen, a beach pro since graduating from Cal State Northridge in 2004, won his fi rst AVP career title in Seattle in June when he teamed with Theo Brunner to defeat Olympians Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson in the fi nals. Allen also partnered with Brunner for four FIVB events that were his fi rst serious foray on the international tour. Allen and Brun- ner recorded a ninth at the FIVB Grand Slam in Long Beach. Allen’s favorite apps are:
Pocket — Saves articles for offl ine reading. If I’m browsing the internet and fi nd a story or article of interest, I simply save to Pocket to read later, offl ine. Great for when I’m traveling and away from the internet.
OverDrive — Allows you to borrow ebooks and audiobooks from your local library. Like the Kindle and Audible apps put together, but free! Just need to sign up with a library card (I use three different districts to increase the odds of a book being available). I listen to audiobooks straight from my phone or send ebooks to my Kindle.
Tinybeans — Online baby journal. Since I don’t want to bombard Facebook with pictures of my enormous baby, we use this site to collect all his best moments, pictures and videos to share with family. Anyone we add gets weekly updates with pictures of him sleeping or drooling all over himself. The calendar view is cool to look back at what was happening on certain dates.

Find My Friends — Tracks your friends using their phone’s GPS. Great to fi nd friends’ location if you are supposed to meet somewhere or they are having a secret party you weren’t invited to. Mostly I use it to track my wife to see when she’ll be home so I can start working or cleaning and act like that’s what I had been doing all day.
Overcast — Podcasts. Looking at this list most of my apps are for consuming media. Listening to podcasts is probably my biggest phone-time activity and Overcast is my preferred podcast app. I like the layout and it has some cool features like “Smart Speed”, which cuts out a show’s pauses to save listening time. Overcast informs me that I’ve currently saved an extra 41 hours with this feature. That’s almost enough time to listen to the entire catalog of Coach Your Brains Out!
