FROM THE PRESIDENT JO ANN ROONEY, JD, LLM, EdD
GO, SET THE WORLD ON FIRE!
I AM DELIGHTED TO SHARE this issue of Loyola magazine with you. It has been a busy semester, yet we remain mindful of the many blessings we have received this year. I have truly enjoyed getting to know our extraordinary students, faculty, staff, and community supporters, and I continue to be inspired by the shared commitment of all Loyolans to our unique Catholic, Jesuit mission. As I said in my inauguration address last month, St. Ignatius’s command to “Go, set the world
on fire!” is what unites us as a community—celebrating our diversity and unique talents, seek- ing God in all things, and educating women and men who will transform the world. I have had many conversations this semester—most notably with our intellectually curious and motivated students, with the dedicated faculty who teach them, and with the hardworking staff who sup- port them—that have underscored the importance of working together to address challenges that face us and all institutions of higher education. The opportunities for us to innovate and excel are innumerable, and the time for us to do this—to light that fire—is now. So much of who we are and who we endeavor to become is captured in our strategic plan,
“Plan 2020: Building a More Just, Humane, and Sustainable World.” It is the blueprint for how we will continue to ground ourselves and grow as a University community, committed to expanding justice and service. As we move into the second year of Plan 2020, we have already made significant progress to ensure greater access to education, promote solutions to health disparities, and further sustainability initiatives. This issue of Loyola magazine features several stories centered around the fourth institutional priority of Plan 2020, addressing societal chal- lenges through partnerships. Whether it is forging meaningful relationships with local schools (page 12), encouraging our students to serve as mentors (page 22), or expanding international service learning opportunities (page 24), we are committed to working as a University commu- nity with our alumni and friends to transform our world. Thank you for your continued support of Loyola University Chicago. I hope you enjoy this
issue of Loyola magazine, and that the peace and joy of this season is with you and yours. Sincerely,
JO ANN ROONEY, JD, LLM, EdD President, Loyola University Chicago
