Senator Philip J. Rock (JD ’64), a former Illinois State Senator, passed away on January 25 at the age of 78. Rock was elected to the Illinois Sen- ate in 1970, where he served for 22 years, the last 14 as president, serv- ing seven terms. During his career, he passed more than 450 pieces of legislation, including the state’s first Child Abuse and Neglect Report- ing Act, and created the nation’s first public institution for the deaf
and blind, the Philip J. Rock Center and School in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. After retirement from the Illinois General Assembly, Rock returned to private law practice in Chicago. Rock was long committed to Loyola, serving on the Board of
Trustees from 1984 to 1998 and as a Life Trustee from 2005 up until his death. He also received the law school Medal of Excellence in 1992 and the President’s Medal in 2002. Rock was a frequent visitor to the law school, a commencement speaker, and a generous mentor to the students. Rock was a positive influence to the many he came in contact with
throughout his life and career. “Not only did he regularly demonstrate his devotion to his family, but it was clear that he was grounded in a quality of compassion and civility that characterized all of his personal and professional relationships,” says James J. Faught, associate dean for administration at the School of Law. “For our students and recent graduates fortunate enough to have
spent time with Senator Phil Rock, he left a lasting gift,” Faught says. “He helped to humanize their journey from student to lawyer and liberated them to pursue careers of service as men and women for others.” Rock is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sheila; daughters Kathleen
Snow, Meghan Simmons and Colleen Mueller (JD ’00); son John "Jay" Rock (JD ’96); 12 grandchildren; and a brother, Michael.
Jean Prendergast Rooney (JFRC '91, BA '93, JD '94), a judge of the Cook County Circuit Court, died December 8 at the age of 45 after a lengthy battle with leukemia. After graduating from the School of Law, Rooney clerked for justices on the Appellate Court and the Illinois Supreme Court before going to work in private practice. She was first appointed to the bench in 2010 and was elected to a six-year term as a judge in 2012. Despite her successful career, Rooney had a reputation for always
putting her family first. She is survived by husband Tim Rooney (JFRC ’88-89, BA ’90), whom she met at Loyola, and her three children; Timo- thy, 14, and twins Thomas and Colleen, 12.
