Collaboration among researchers in new center will lead to better care for patients
A groundbreaking newresearch facility on Loyola's Health Sciences Campus is changing the way re- searchers work in the lab, paving the way for advances in patient care. The Center for Translational
Research and Education, which cel- ebrated its grand opening April 21, is home to more than 500 research- ers and students from all parts of Loyola’s Health Sciences Division— the Stritch School of Medicine, the Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing, and The Graduate School. The building will house multiple types of research, creating opportunities for advances in patient care to be real- ized through partnerships between the Health Sciences Division and Loyola University Health System.
The five-story, 225,000-square-
foot building's floorplan is designed to foster collaboration between researchers and educators, with the aim of increasing research productiv- ity by 40 to 50 percent. The ultimate goal is to enhance translational research, the process of turning basic science discoveries in the lab into effective treatments and procedures for patients. “People underestimate the
importance of informal contacts that [researchers] have,” says Richard S. Cooper, MD, chair of the public health sciences department. “We need that kind of everyday interac- tion to collaborate.”
