Loyola ties with Harvard for top graduation rate

When it comes to the success of student athletes in the classroom, few schools can compete with Loyola. In fact, according to the latest rankings from the NCAA, only Harvard University is on par with Loyola on the graduation rate of student athletes at Division I institu- tions. Loyola tied Harvard for the top spot in the latest Graduation Success Rate (GSR) rankings with a score of 99 percent. Loyola also ranks first in GSR scores within the Missouri Valley Conference and the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities.

Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt, BVM, shows her Hall of Fame plaque to the crowd in Gentile Arena. A true Hall of Famer

With her custom Nike sneakers and a maroon and gold Ram- bler scarf, Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt, BVM, is an unmistak- able fixture at Loyola men’s bas- ketball games. So when Loyola announced plans to unveil its newly revamped Athletics Hall of Fame in Gentile Arena, Sister Jean seemed the perfect choice for the first new inductee. As chaplain of the men’s

basketball team for more than two decades, Sister Jean has been one of the Ramblers’ strongest assets. She offers a prayer before each home game,

gets the crowd riled up to cheer on the team, and even sends the players personal e-mails with notes on their performance after a game. Her years of spiritual support, team spirit, and unwav- ering passion for the sport were honored during halftime of the January 21 home game, which saw the Ramblers pull out a 67- 61 victory over Evansville. “It is only fitting that Sister

Jean joins our Hall of Fame as we unveil its spectacular new location in Gentile Arena,” says Loyola Athletics Director Steve Watson. “She has touched the

lives of countless Loyola alumni and we are fortunate to have her on our team.” The Hall of Fame induction

wasn’t the only accolade Sister Jean received this season. In March, she was presented with the Missouri Valley Conference “Spirit of the Valley” award, which honors a member of an MVC team for his or her passion for the conference, strong work ethic, and sense of humor.

The PNC Student Achievers pro- gram, a newly launched initiative of Loyola and PNC Bank, kicked off this semester by honoring four outstand- ing students for achievement and leadership in the classroom, in the community, and in competition. The first two PNC awards were

presented during halftime of high-profile athletic events. Arrupe College student Stephanie Meza was honored during the men’s basket- ball game against Wichita State on February 12, and Quinlan student Morgan Olszewski was recognized at the March 16 men’s volleyball game against Ohio State. The final two awards will be presented to student athletes at the Weekend of Excel- lence in April. “This student recogni- tion platform further demonstrates PNC’s commitment to the University community and to our shared values of leadership and excellence,” says Tom Sorboro, senior associate ath- letic director for external operations.
