FROM THE PRESIDENT JO ANN ROONEY, JD, LLM, EdD

FULFILLING OUR MISSION

Our Loyola education, rooted in a Jesuit, Catholic mission that dates back more than 450

years, is more critical today than ever before. In a world fraught with discord and division, our edu- cational commitment to excellence compels us to promote civic engagement and civil discourse as we prepare students for lives as societal change agents (see page 24). We are unwavering in our commit- ment to fostering a university community that em- braces diversity in all its forms, and which celebrates that diversity which unifies and strengthens us. Every day, I encounter incredible students and

alumni who embody the Loyola mission. In this issue, you will meet alumnus Harry Rossi (page 36), who has spent a career in service to students and is an outstanding supporter of his alma mater. You’ll read about Cassandra Gaddo (page 35), a first- generation college student who attended Loyola on a Presidential Scholarship and now works to help other young women achieve their college dreams. And you’ll learn how Pedro Regalado excelled at Loyola and is now pursuing a PhD to further un- derstand urban environments and their impact on minority populations (page 42). Harry, Cassandra, and Pedro are just three shining examples of our inspiring alumni who are living lives of engagement with and service to others. Jesuit, Catholic institutions like Loyola are poised

to break the cycle of poverty, ignorance, and indif- ference by preparing women and men to take on the difficult issues impacting our society and our world. To fulfill this mission, we are working hard to ensure that a Loyola education is both accessible and affordable to talented and motivated students from all backgrounds. Rising education expenses, burgeoning student loan debt, and uncertainty regarding state and federal budget assistance are all

critical issues facing higher education institutions. Even as we celebrate the successful completion of our recent scholarship campaign, Access to Excel- lence (page 10), scholarship fundraising remains a top priority for us. Building our endowment and engaging donors to partner with us will be key responsibilities of our new Senior Vice President for Advancement, Damon W. Cates, EdD (page 5), who we are delighted to welcome to Loyola this spring. We will be looking to our alumni, friends, and other supporters who recognize and value the transforma- tive impact of a Loyola education to help us in this important effort. We are also very pleased to welcome new

academic leadership in four key areas. Michael F. Andrews, PhD (page 29), will serve as the next director of the John Felice Rome Center. Steve A. N. Goldstein, MD, PhD, has been named the dean of the Stritch School of Medicine. Michael J. Kaufman, JD, has been appointed the new dean of the School of Law, and Goutham M. Menon, PhD, will be the new dean of the School of Social Work. You can read more about each of our new deans on page 8. As we continue to grow and move forward, I

thank you for your continued support of Loyola University Chicago and, most especially, our stu- dents. Together, we can truly prepare our students to live extraordinary lives.

Sincerely,

DR. JO ANN ROONEY President
