trees and utilities can co-exist L

ast year the Arbor Day Foundation named PEC a 2016 Tree Line USA

utility in honor of its commitment to proper tree pruning, planting and care inside its service area.

PEC is one of two electric cooperatives in the state to achieve the status and at 17 years, PEC carries the longest running Tree Line USA utility designation for an Oklahoma cooperative.

Tree Line USA, a partnership between the Foundation and the National Association of State Foresters, recognizes public and private utilities for pursuing practices that protect and enhance America’s trees. Tree Line USA promotes the dual goals of delivering safe and reliable electricity while maintaining healthy community forests.

“Trees are a critical part of urban and rural landscapes all across the United States,” said Dan Lambe, President of the Arbor Day Foundation. “Service providers like People’s Electric Cooperative demonstrate that it’s possible for trees and utilities to co-exist for the benefi t of communities and citizens.”

Led by Lee McElroy, PEC’s Director of Environmental Services and Vegetation

Management and certifi ed arborist, PEC met fi ve requirements to be designated as a Tree Line USA utility. We follow industry standards for quality tree care, have annual worker training in best tree care practices, participate in and sponsor tree-planting and public education programs, have a tree-based energy conservation program and participate in Arbor Day celebrations.

Although vegetation growing too close to power lines and distribution equipment causes 15 percent of power interruptions according to the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA), the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) estimates a single tree has the cooling eff ect of 10 room- sized air conditioners running 20 hours a day. 550800801

In order to ensure dependable service, PEC is diligent in its vegetation management. PEC crews remove and prune trees near our power lines at no cost to our members in order to keep the electric lines free of trees and brush.

If you see a tree touching an electric line or in danger of falling into the electric line or if you have questions regarding tree trimming, contact Lee McElroy at (580) 559-8482.

I 2017 Youth tour Contest

n January, we began the process to select two local students to represent PEC on the 2017 Youth Tour. PEC’s Youth Tour contest is open to ALL 11th grade students enrolled in school (or homeschool) systems located in one of the 11 counties served by PEC.

Representatives from PEC have visited with interested juniors at Ada, Byng, Calvin, Coalgate, Holdenville, Roff , Stonewall, Stratford, Stuart, Tupelo, and Vanoss.

In February the local high schools had the opportunity to be a test hosting site for the students. The test was also administered at PEC’s headquarters on February 4 and on February 9. PEC had over 70 students take the test for the opportunity of a lifetime. 12202011

An invitation will be extended to those

students that receive the top 10 scores on the test. On March 9 we will conduct the interview portion for the top 10 fi nalists. A panel of judges will award the two delegates the trip to Washington D.C. based on the students’ subject knowledge, originality, appearance and personality.

Look for those two delegates’ names to be announced in our April newsletter.
