INDUSTRY NEWS GM to Invest $177M in Indiana, Michigan Casting Facilities


General Motors, Detroit, an- nounced plans to invest more than $177 in two Midwestern casting facilities. T e auto maker plans to invest $127.4 million in its casting facility in Bedford, Ind., that is ex- pected to create 127 jobs. GM’s Bed- ford Casting Operations will expand its casting capabilities of powertrain


and structural components to support production of new aluminum engine blocks and components. “T is investment in the future


recognizes the excellent workforce at Bedford Casting Operations,” said Lamar Rucker, manager, Bedford Casting Operations. “It also demon- strates GM’s collaboration with our


UAW and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers partners, which refl ects how we continue to bring new powertrain solutions to our customers.” Including this investment, GM has


invested more than $420 million in the Bedford plant since 2010. T e Bedford plant currently has approximately 700 employees on three shifts and produces transmission casings, converter hous- ings, heads, and small gas engine blocks used in Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles.


GM also announced an investment of


$50 million in its Saginaw Metal Casting Operations, Saginaw, Mich., that will add a new process line to produce driveline components and retain 68 jobs. “We’ll take it one piece at a time,” said


GM’s Bedford casting facility will boost its workforce by 127 with the investment.


Harry Cripps, UAW Local 668 President, who added that the plant used to employ several thousand and today employs about 650. “Hopefully, we can bring a good por- tion of that back. It’s magnifi cent.”
