Contest Announced The American Foundry Society (AFS) and the


Foundry Educational Foundation (FEF) have an- nounced the first place winner of the 2015 Student Technology Contest. Pittsburg State Univ., Pittsburg, Kan., won for its Permanent Mold Design and Rebuild Project.


The second place winner was Virginia Tech Univ.,


Blacksburg, Va., for its project, Cast Aluminum Mesostructures Using 3-D Printed Sand Cores With Encapsulation. The Pittsburg State Univ. team, including students


Kyle Ragan, Brendan Herrera, Jeremy McLennan, Aaron Noack, Tyler Casteel and Nick Crain, received a $1,800 scholarship for their efforts, and their paper will be published in the Winter 2016 issue of the In- ternational Journal of Metalcasting (IJMC). The Virginia Tech team, including students Matt


Antonelli, Ian Knudson, Allison Popernack and Avalon Schuler, received a $1,200 scholarship and also will have their paper published in IJMC. The AFS/FEF Student Technology Contest exists


to encourage student participation and recognizes ex- cellence in student research in the field of metalcasting technology. Projects must represent a student’s current or recent work in the area of metalcasting technology or molten metal processing. The contest highlights student and senior projects, graduate research and other work.

Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.), S. 280 would put in place common sense reforms to improve the permit- ting process for infrastructure projects. Specifically, it would expedite permit decision-making and inject certainty into the process by facilitating coordination and deadline-setting among agencies. It would also improve transparency and reduce unnecessary delays caused by litigation.
