Northern Iowa Awarded $2.7M for 3-D Printing In June, the Iowa Economic
Development Authority approved a $2.72 million grant for printing equipment for the Metal Casting Center at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI), Cedar Falls, Iowa, which operates the TechWorks campus in nearby Waterloo, Iowa, as part of the Iowa Advanced Manufacturing Network Hub. TechWorks is a high-tech ag-
based product development and manufacturing complex that has been involved with Iowa’s Advanced Manufacturing Work Group for the last two years. Te grant application outlined a number of primary goals, including: • Te expansion of additive manufacturing beyond sand mold printing to materials including metals, plastics and ceramics.
• Te introduction of manufac- turers and students to design
software to build the skills to develop products and prepare CAD
documents for 3-D printing.
• Te utili- zation of existing resources of TechWorks, including shop space, office support and meeting space.
Te grant will fund, among other
things, new 3-D printers and scan- ners to broaden the university’s to other industries in the state. “Tis really takes us from serving just metalcasting to other manufac- turers in Iowa,” said Randy Pilking- ton, director of business and com-
munity service, UNI. “With the support we’re getting, now we can move forward with the additive manufacturing center.”
The move will
be completed by September, Pilkington said. UNI will hire a technician to assist Metal
Casting Center staff and operate the equipment. “With the Metal Casting Center,
we have started to build a national reputation as the place to innovate with 3-D technology and industrial applications,” said Steve Dust, presi- dent, TechWorks. “As a result of that, we’ve been serving companies from all over the country.”
