Reshoring Initiative Founder Harry Moser to Keynote Metalcasting Congress on April 25

T e American Foundry Society (AFS) announced that Reshoring Initiative founder Harry Moser will deliver the keynote address on April 25 at the Metalcasting Congress in Milwaukee. “Harry Moser’s visionary work

has not only helped many com- panies document the economic advantages of reshoring, but also led to his induction into the In- dustry Week Manufacturing Hall of Fame,” said Doug Kurkul, the CEO of AFS. The mission of the Reshoring

Initiative is to bring back good, well-paying manufacturing jobs by assisting companies to more accurately assess the total cost of offshoring. The Initiative helps companies shift their collec- tive thinking from “offshoring is cheaper” to “local production re-

duces the total cost of ownership.” “Metalcasting is an exception-

ally important industry,” said Moser. “I worked for six years for DISAMATIC U.S., and my father ran the foundry at Singer Sew- ing Machine’s main plant in New Jersey, so I am quite familiar with the metalcasting industry.” Moser also was president and

chairman of high-end machine tool supplier GF AgieCharmilles. He is

frequently quoted in the Wall Street Journal, Forbes, and USA Today and has appeared on Fox Business, Mar- ketWatch and PBS. He earned an MS in engineering

at MIT and an MBA at the Univer- sity of Chicago. Moser will deliver the keynote

address from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Later that day, from 3:15-4:45 p.m., he will lead a workshop on quantifying

EJ Set to Begin Construction on New Facility EJ (East Jordan, Michigan) was

approved for a property-tax incen- tive to build its new facility near Elmira, Michigan. According to a report from the

Petoskey News, Warner (Michigan) Township approved the incentive unanimously. T e abatement, the report said, would lower property taxes on a $39 million part of EJ’s planned $125 million investment, with the assistance coming over a 12-year period. T e company’s 350 employees

are expected to be retained. “Warner Township’s approval of

the application for tax abatement is key to our ability to move forward on building the new foundry near Elmira. Our current plan is to break ground in the spring,” Tracy Mal-

domestic sourcing’s fi nancial benefi t for companies or their customers. “We helped a Chicago area

contract manufacturer save a $60 million order versus a lower-price Chinese competitor,” Moser said. The goal of the workshop is

to train AFS members to achieve similar results. The workshop is included with Congress registra- tion, but advance registration is requested to ensure a seat and workshop materials. Another highlight of the event

will be the Hoyt Lecture, to be delivered by Douglas Trinowski, HA International, as well as numerous technical and management sessions, AFS Institute courses, supplier exhibits, and the Cast in North America exhibit. For more information, visit

Earlier reports said the company

will upgrade its facilities and “phase out” its current location. T e new plant will be “state of the art” and all jobs will be relocated. EJ has said it plans to keep its corporate headquarters, pattern shop, product development group, water products and Northern Michigan sales offi ces at their current locations.

According to the report, the abate- ment is expected to be worth more than $6 million, though it must still be approved by the state. “T is is really a pretty excellent

project for our area because it keeps a longtime, really high-quality em- ployer in our area,” said Andy Hayes, president, Northern Lakes Economic Alliance, according to the report. 

pass, president, EJ, told the Petoskey News. “We are looking forward to the opportunity to continue our legacy of manufacturing in North- ern Michigan and being a good cor- porate citizen, which now includes Warner Township.”
