facilities surveyed, 1,160 reported providing at least one value added- service. Of those that answered the value-added question, 77% (894) off ers either fi nish or rough ma- chining—often both are off ered. T e least common value added
service, coating, was still off ered by 22% of those who answered the question. Nearly half of those who answered the question off ered at least assembly, painting, engineer- ing and design, patternmaking, heat treatment and machining.
Industries Served Roughly half (802) of the met-
alcasting participants also provid- ed information on which end-use industries they served. T e top ten markets include valves/fi ttings, pumps and compressors, mining machinery, oil fi eld machinery, farm machinery, construction ma- chinery, railroad, military defense, gears and power transmission, and somewhat surprisingly, art and ornamental. T irty-one percent of the respondents said they made castings for the art and ornamen- tal industry. T e smallest segments, with
fewer than 100 claiming them as customer markets, included home appliances, soil pipe/fi ttings, computer/offi ce equipment, and sanitary/radiator.
