should always be blended or tapered gradually into the thinner one. Also, whenever possible, avoid L, T and X intersections. Radii inside and outside edges rather than designing a sharp L corner. When T sections cannot be avoided, adverse eff ects can be minimized by providing generous radii at corners and making the arms unequal in thickness. Ad- ditionally, “dimpling” (a small indent at the top of the T’s intersection) can help reduce the severity of hot spots. X intersections have particularly ad- verse eff ects in copper castings. T ey are almost always avoidable, though, by converting an X intersection into two off set T sections, for example. Figure 3 shows a cast copper con- nector used in electrical power gen- eration. As a result, manufacturers and retailers are able to market cast and wrought copper products as benefi cial in applications where it is touched, including hospitals and mass transit. ”At least 10 manufacturers are now actively selling antimicrobial copper


products, including IV poles, railings, door hardware, carts and [other fre- quently touched items],” said Harold Michels, senior vice president, technol- ogy and technical services, Copper Development Association, New York. Testing shows that antimicrobial copper alloys kill more than 99% of


several bacteria within two hours of exposure, though these surfaces are considered to be a supplement to and not a substitute for sanitation protocols. Metalcasters that produce touch-surface components have an opportunity considering many of these products require intricate shapes that make casting a natural manufacturing method.
