For centuries, foundries have relied on time-intensive traditional processes which require a pattern to create sand molds for cast parts and are subject to delays and human error. But now the industry is experiencing a transformation, as additive manufacturing – led by ExOne – offers the promise of a fast and cost-effective way to build accurate and complex sand cores and molds for castings. Prototyping and Production Services ExOne delivers printed sand cores and molds


for prototyping and real-world production ap- plications using standard foundry materials. A variety of binders and additives are also available with contract services. Headquartered in Penn- sylvania, ExOne has Production Service Centers in Texas, Michigan, Washington and Nevada as well as in Germany, Italy and Japan, localizing the process around the globe. Customers of the ExOne process see sig- nificant, strategic advantages over traditional methods. The ability to expand creativity and flexibility through design complexity without the need for draft angles, enables product


designs previously unattainable. Addition- ally, the opportunity for rapid production of castings and prototypes in turn reduces lead times significantly, and gets new products to the market faster.


ExOne helps customers in the foundry industry produce castings for prototyping, replacement parts, complex shapes and rotat- ing parts by printing entire mold packages or printing just the cores in a “hybrid” approach. Delivery of mold packages to the foundry is measured in days versus months and the use of digital files reduces the need for pattern storage. In addition, customers have yielded further benefits such as improved core ac- curacy, reduced veining, superior blade registration, better hydraulic performance and ease of dynamic balance.

printer creates complex sand casting cores and molds directly from CAD data, in about 22-24 hours – without hard tooling, which significantly reduces


lead time, increases


design freedom, and improves the entire cast- ing process chain. At GIFA in June, ExOne will unveil the Exerial™ – the largest ExOne system to-date with a total build platform of 3,168 liters and multiple industrial stations. The Exerial™ system offers printing output rates nearly four times faster than the S-Max™, utilizing multiple print heads and automation controls for true series production.
