Michael Yates is a veteran (not VFW-eligible) and Auxiliary member who joined on his younger brother’s eligibility. His brother, who passed away in January of 2016 from complications related to his exposure to Agent Orange, had served in Vietnam. Michael enlisted two weeks after his brother joined the Army. “Being a veteran, I always felt there are still challenges,” he said of his decision to become an Auxiliary member and President. “After raising my family and now that I’m retired, I can give some of my time to help my fellow veterans who aren’t quite as fortunate as me.” Among his Auxiliary’s most current projects is partnering with

When Janice Bartholomew looked up to the sky at dusk on Father’s Day in Oakland, Oregon, she couldn’t help but think that her father-in-law, Robert “Bart” Bartholomew, was with their family in spirit. It couldn’t be a coincidence that the sun had

painted such a beautiful interpretation of the American Flag, nature’s Flag. It was a sign to the Bartholomews that Bart, who had passed away, was still present and still loved the colors. Bart, a true patriot, enlisted in the U.S. Navy

in 1951, and served in the Korean War aboard the USS Proton. He was a Life Member of the VFW, joining in 1967 and remaining active for decades.

Bart was All American District Commander from 1994-1995. He was also Commander of District 12 Honor Guard, offering military burial services for veterans of Douglas County, Oregon. He was instrumental in bringing the Voice of Democracy program to local schools as well. His wife of 59 years, Jean, is an Auxiliary

Life Member, joining in 1967. She volunteered for the Roseburg VA Healthcare System for 48 years and still donates her time twice a week to veterans. Janice joined the Auxiliary on the eligibility of her father, Harry E. Noble. Both she and Jean are members of Auxiliary 3970.
